Double Degree Programs in Medical School

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No you cant do that. Your MD degree will take up all your time for the next four years.

You can play a musical instrument for fun while your in med school, but i wouldnt count on trying to get both degrees.

Agreed. Don't plan on doing anything simultaneously with the MD. If you opt to take some time off during the MD program, it's possible to get a masters (MPH being the most common), but folks only do this if they have identified a career which needs the second degree, or if they are letting a spouse/fiancee in med school in a different year catch up (so they can do a couples match). Many schools offer joint MBA or JD degrees, although the need for these degrees is dependent on the very limited careers that require them. So no, don't expect to be a part time med student and squeeze other academics on top. You will have substantially less free time in med school than college. More like an hour or two to goof off a day, not time to attend other classes.

You happened to pick two of the busiest degrees ever as your choice. MPH is possible in 4 years but rough, and usually takes 5. Music Performance.....you'd have to be a god. My current roommates are all music people and they are gone from 7 a.m. till 10 p.m. with a few breaks if they are lucky. Class, Teach, Practice, practice, practice, practice, rehearsal and repeat.

Hi everyone,

Would anyone know of possibility of doubling in MD and music performance degree? Or MD and other humanities major (not medical humanities)?

Thanks.

two diverse professional interests that should not (and cannot) be joined together. Pick one, then do the other, if you really want to.

The UCSF/UCB JMP might be able to accomidate you. Probably not with performance (I can't imagine a program that could do those two fields), but it seems as though you're given quite a bit of freedom to explore what you want for your research project (leading to an MS). The JMP focuses on social science & humanities and relating them to health (which is similar to medical humanities I suppose).

It would be much easier to get the music degree first

Agreed. You will be so up to your neck in debt after med school that you are unlikely to want to do something that delays your ability to repay the debt. Play music as a hobby on the side, don't concern yourself with a formal degree, because honestly careerwise an MD is going to be plenty.

Additional thought:

Figure out what you want your career to be, then figure out the quickest way to get there. If it doesn't require a degree, save your money.
