Just got rejected from SUNY Downstate. Does anyone know their average GPA and MCAT? I want to know because I thought I had a chance there. 😉

Thanks,

C.

According to Princeton Review book on med schools, all the SUNY's are at about 3.56 overall gpa, 3.6 science, and 30-32 mcat.

Thanks for the info. Just as I thought, I'm too good for them. 😀

(this of course is a lie).

actually, i think downstate's are lower, probably around 29- 30 mcat.... stony brook bumps the SUNY average up

don't feel bad chieka,
admissions is a crap shoot!😡

Which schools did you apply to?

At least last year they bothered to ask me for additional info before rejecting me. Rejection from Downstate but waitlisted at Stony Brook- go figure.

Oops, that was "before rejecting me LAST YEAR". I was waitlisted at Stony Brook last year too- hoping against hope to be interviewed there again this year 🙂

Based on my experience, they waited just enough for the check to be encashed before printing out my rejection letter. Not only is it phrased rudely (comparing with other letters wherein they explain or suggest talking to their adcom member or a specific reason) but also states categorically that the rejectee should not try to contact their adcom members or director as their decision is final and that they would not know about your application !!??!!

As if that is not only unpofessional, the letter is not even stamp signed (forget about some real person signing it).

Anyway it feels good to vent it out (sorry if I have hurt anyones feelings), so I believe that something weird is going on at downstate based solely on my experience, if others have had better experience then that is good and I might think that mine was just an exception for whatever reasons.

So Bottom Line ...Chieka don't feel so bad, and you will get in soon somehwere.

I agree that something weird is going on. One day, I received three identical letters telling me my app was incomplete. What is that?!?! These people make Howard look organized!

That is sweet, and I'm not moping (too much). Other schools have shown interest. 🙂

Did you apply to any Canadian schools?

wait- are you not from NYC? If you arent a resident your chances are super slim- about 99% of their class is from in - state.

Ouch! Chieka, I hope you applied to some non-state schools considering that you're not a resident of the states. 🙁

I am neither an American citizen nor a permanent resident, so the odds are against me. 🙁 I've been faring well, though, especially considering that I submitted the AMCAS late (Sept 25) and was an August MCATer.

Badassy and Tuesday Weld, not to worry; I applied to three of the five Ontario med schools. I didn't apply out of province in Canada because chances are slim.

Downstate is horrible!!!
I had a horrible interviewer
the school is crappy
on the day that I went, there was no heat
I was freezing in my suit
I hated my interviewer, he followed that list of questions religiously, and I didn't have a chance to show that I am qualified to a MD
but who needs them, I got in to Stony Brook
so it is my turn to reject downstate before they reject me
their stats are low, ppl get in with 27, 28 on MCAT

anyone who is waiting for stony, good luck
it is a good school, nice people, esp the dean of admissions, who was my interviewer

Wow - that is harsh. Congrats on Stony Brook, though.

iffy premed - when was you app complete? I know i turned in my stuff late, when should i be expecting an interview for stony?

i wana know what the advantages of goin to the US r over canada, especially if i want to do residency in the US. i know that US residencies consider canadian graduates, but how about a foreign national with a US degree vs a canadian with a canadian degree when workin for residency spots???

Iffy,

Looks like we may be classmates! I'll be PM'ing you....

Also... I'm scheduled to interview at Downstate toward the end of January. Now after reading all you guys' posts, I'm starting to think the place bites.... 😕

Congrats about Stony Brook! When did you find out about your acceptance ? I'm still waiting 🙁

my stony brook info:

I filed my AMCAS by early July
supplements were in at the end of August
but my file was not complete till mid-late Sept (premed advisor was slow)
I got interviewed on dec 10th
got my acceptance dec 21st
one of the reason why my admission went thru quickly: i am a stony brook undergraduate, and my interviewer was the dean, so I guess he really liked me! hehehehe 😉

well...anyone who is looking at stony brook as a place to go, I just have to say that it is a good school
100 person/class, so you get alot of personal attention
only bad thing: they grade on honors/p/fail scale, not as easy as NYU or Mount sinai's P/F, but hey...we are premeds, a lil competition doesn't hurt anyone
