For all you sdners who are heading to downstate in aug., its time to come out and be known. I'm so exicted to be going to Downstate and training at Kings County Hospital

HI,

I am with you on that. I tried to do this in april but I received no responses.

I'm also heading to Downstate in August....stilll debating whether I should live in the dorm or not.

Looks like I'll be joining you guys (if my admission letter ever gets here)!

Looks like I will also be joining you guys this August. See ya there!

I was also wondering about local off-campus housing.

accepted! just got the call this morning! woo-hoo.

Hey y'all, me too!

I've posted this before, but I've been living here in Brooklyn for about 7 years, near the school for 2and1/2. If anyone has any Brooklyn/housing/moving to New York questions, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to help you out.

I have so many questions! here's a few...
1. I'll be living in the dorms for the first year, I would prefer a single but if not, what are your impressions about a double in a studio or a dorm? how much is it per month?
2. when isthe first day of orientation? when cane we move into the dorms?
3. what are the nearest subway lines into manhattan? how far are theyfrom campus?
4. what do the downtaters do for fun around east flatbush?
5. i'm a very social person, so i'm hoping there will be some party-hungry MS1's there this upcomming year
6. so excited.

Congrats to everyone who's been accepted! I'll see you all on August 18, the first day of orientation!

By the way, I'm currently looking for a roommate for my 2-bedroom in Park Slope. I just found the place a couple weeks ago, and the lease begins on July 15. If you're interested, read on.....

It's a nice 2-bedroom in the Park Slope area. According to the landlord, it was renovated about 9 months ago. This is probably true as the whole place looks really new....hardwood floors, new windows, new kitchen, ceiling fans in every room, nice bathroom, it occupies 2nd floor of a 3-story walkup. One bedroom is slightly larger than the other and has a bigger closet. But both bedrooms are very spacious with plenty of natural light. I was actually surprised when I saw this place as I thought all New York apartments are small and cramped. The place is only a half block away from the subway (M,R,W). Street parking seems to be ample as it's not on a very congested street in Park Slope - very convenient if you have a car! I will have mine, so carpooling to classes is definitely an option. Place is available July 15 for exactly 1-year lease. Landlord seems to prefer Downstate students. He also does a pretty rigorous credit/financial check, so it's pretty safe for either roommate to trust the other's ability to pay the rent on time. I prefer a mature male non-smoker, but that's only a preference, and I'm willing to consider otherwise. I'm not sure about pets, but I think the rule is cats okay, but no dogs. The rent is $1,700 per month, and can be split depending on who wants to take the bigger/smaller room. I'm fine either way. Keep in mind that this is a much, much better deal than living in the dorms! I have 2nd year friends in Downstate right now who said that living in the dorms was pricey for the standard of accomodation that you get.

If you're interested in this really nice place, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks!

When is the white coat ceremony? Has anyone who has been called for acceptance off the waitlist received their admissions letter in the mail and if so how long did it take?

White Coat is on Thursday August 21 in the afternoon. Details were to come 'under seperate cover' than the general orientation info packet, apparently. First day of orientation is August 18th. You can move into the dorms on Sunday August 17th. Classes start on August 25th.

Answers for BigRedStress:

The closest subway is the 2/5 line, at Winthrop Street. Its about two blocks from the school. When the 5 is running express, it'll take about 30 minutes to get into downtown Manhattan. When it goes local, its 5-10 minutes extra. The Q line is about a 15 minute walk away, at Prospect Park. The school is also on numerous bus lines, but that is really only useful for within-Brooklyn travel, not for getting into Manhattan. If you own a bike, bring it! Once you get used to riding in traffic, it is the best way to get around Brooklyn, and we are about a 40 minute ride into Manhattan.

Honestly, I don't know how much there is to do for fun in the area of East Flatbush right around the school, though I have plans to go scoping out sometime soon on a day off. But, we've got the whole city at our disposal for fun, and I think that a willingness to get out to other areas of Brooklyn and Manhattan is crucial to a good Downstate experience. New York/Brooklyn is a great city to live in!

First off, I was wondering how big the first year class is. I'm guessing 150 or 180. Does that sound right to anyone?

So what percentage of 1st years live in the dorms? And is there reasonable and safe off-campus housing nearby? Nearby meaning roll out of bed 15 minutes before class and manage to *walk* there in time for lecture. If not, Park Slope is one neighborhood I'm looking into, especially if there is a place near the 2 line. And it would be a reverse commute, so it would be great.

I think the nearest Q stop is not Prospect Park. It's actually Parkside Avenue, which would cut the walk down to 5-10 minutes.

I'm actually not too excited about living in a dorm again. I was wondering if there was a house somewhere that a bunch of med students share near downstate.

MikeStuy -

When I said Q at Prospect Park I meant "over near Prospect Park" - the Parkside stop is about a 15 minute walk. And that area, over near the park, is pretty OK and close to school. When I say OK I mean that the necessities (grocery stores, produce markets, laundromats) are plentiful along Flatbush Ave, and while it isn't pretty, its safe and the rents, especially if you share, are good. I've lived over here for about 2 years, and never had problems, and being right near the park is great.

Commute-wise, its pretty close - when I was testing out the distance pre-interview, I walked there and back in one washing machine cycle, which puts the round trip at about 30 minutes. I can ride my bike there in about 5/7 minutes. The area is known as 'Lefferts Gardens'; common folk don't know the name, but you do see it used in real estate ads. If you want to try to stay along the 2/5 line, and the Slope is not coming through for you, also try out along Eastern Parkway as far as Franklin Ave (Brooklyn Museum/Botanic Garden area) where the subway lines split - an OK area and also a reasonable subway commute. And check out Prospect Heights, because that can put you near the 2/5, just on the other side of Flatbush from Park Slope. Might be a little cheaper, too.

I think a high percentage of 1st years live in the dorm, just because its hard to find a place, esp. if you aren't already in the area.

rebaj - thanks for advice.

did anyone hear about the cruise after the white coat ceremony on thursday? i heard this from someone who got accepted to downstate as well.

It's official, I FINALLY got my admissions letter, I'm so excited! See you all on the 18th!

Anyone take the BLS course yet? If so, how was it? Also, which text would you prefer, BLS or Fundamentals of BLS? Did you have to get the book before the course?

anybody gotten their housing lottery results yet? i haven't gotten mine yet, but i called and they emailed me the result. i got a studio single.

I just took it. It's a piece of cake and you don't need to prepare ahead. Just show up with your 70+ bucks and you'll be fine.

Hello and congrats to all....

Took long enough this thread to get going....

See you in August

Joining the bandwagon 🙂 I am taking the CPR course this Friday at Kings County Hospital which is located right across SUNY Downstate. This is the the last course they are offering before our deadline (which is August 1st.) So if anyone wants to take it call them at (718) 245-4797. It starts at 9:30 AM on July 11 and costs ~ $85.

See you all in August
