Hello everyone... I wanted to start a casual thread that for once does NOT focus on the extraciriculars/experiences that necessarily end up on your med school app. I just realized that I don't really know much about other pre-meds, and I would kind of like to. Look at it as a glimpse into the people that will one day comprise the medical profession and ultimately be your colleagues. Keep it casual... brag about what you're good at (other than organic chem of course), hobbies, what you love to do, etc.

A little about me: Although during the week I'm slaving away here at school, during my free time I try to spend as much time as I can restoring/rebuilding/welding old cars and trucks. I write articles and run a sort of online "help desk" for other car enthusiasts. Its fun and it feels good to spare someone the frustration and mistakes that I may have encountered on the way. I love woodworking and making things that my friends/family can really use. I like working on every aspect of computers, and love programming some of the coolest, most useless programs you'll ever see. 🙂 Other than that I occasionally play in pool tournaments, and am really into weightlifting. Theres more, but enough about me. Take a study break and talk about yourself for a bit.

Amen to a break. I work full time in a lab and do secondaries in the evenings. However, I love food. I like trying out all the restaurants in the neighborhood. On the weekends, I go out to the farmer's market and pick up random vegetables to cook. I'm not the greatest cook, but I've been having fun with the recipes from epicurious.com

Hey there guys,

Grand idea, this! Finnpipette, I'm completely with you on the food. I'm hugely into food and wine--both sampling others' wares, and making my own. LOVE Indian food, especially (in fact, I sat alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins the other night at my fave Indian restau here in Toronto--apparently he digs chicken tikka too). When not working as an RA or working on my thesis, I'm often found either: a) on a squash court; b) on a golf course or driving range (I recently became hooked on the sport of the homeland); c) traveling somewhere (can't get enough of traveling, and scientific conferences definitely help to kill two birds with one stone). Music memorabilia collection has also been my thing for a while too, along with quilting (!), running, jazz singing...

Cheers,
Kirsteen

Kristeen, I think I love you, but anyway. . . in much of my free time I try to do some good stress-relieving activities. I'm into working out and meditation. After either of those the world always seems a little brighter. Yay endorphins. I also watercolor paint and occasionally write some fiction. Creative outlets are really useful to get out the frustration of this process. During the week, you'll often catch me with a copy of the economist, a smile, and a pair of birks. (not all guaranteed on every day) Finally, on weekends, party-time. I've got an MA in bartending 🙂 and like mixing things up for folk.

Hi! As you can tell by my user name, I love music. I've been playing the piano since 2nd grade, and I've been both singing and playing the hammered dulcimer since high school (check out http://everythingdulcimer.com if you don't know what HD is and you're curious). My biggest regret in college is that I have not found enough time to play my instruments, although my singing has definitely improved through voice lessons and choral singing at school. I think I'm gonna try out for a solo or 2 this year if I can work up the courage...😱 I still can't shake the stage fright when it comes to musical performance, although I used to act a lot in high school, and I never was afraid onstage.

Personality: I'm somewhat introverted...I don't like going to big parties, etc. I see myself as a stable, down-to-earth, mature person in general, but there's always a time and a place for goofing off. I think I have a good sense of humor. Above all, I am an honest person and a hard worker.

In the miscellaneous department...I love Chinese food, video games (Final Fantasy!!!), origami, and watching TV. I'm addicted to my NBC shows (and yes, I do watch ER. So sue me.). I'm working 3 jobs (each about 5 hours/week) this semester: psychology tutoring, Kaplan training, and lab stuff. I'm majoring in biology and psychology at Cornell University (go Big Red! Boo Harvard!). I participate in Tae Kwon Do as a club sport/PE class here at school, and although I hold only a blue belt now, I would like to get my black belt some time in the future. In terms of belt rankings, I'm about halfway there, but psychologically it's a long way off for me.

As for my thoughts on premed-ness: I just finished all but one of my secondaries (UCSD is keeping me waiting), and I'm confident about the strength of my application, but I still worry about things like the possibility of a bad rec (damn those waivers!), screwing up an interview, etc. I only applied to 11 schools, but I have a friend that only applied to 6 (all MD/PhD programs to boot), so that makes me feel a little better. I wish the process weren't so long and drawn out, but I got my apps in somewhat early (but not that early compared to most of you guys!).

For all of you who managed to read this far: Here's some loooove! 😍

Hey Wardens- What kind of meditation do you do? Just curious 'cause I never meet guys who meditate, kinda rare, I guess.

Hmmm.. about me? Well, currently I enjoy a game called airsofting which is akin to paintballing only using high-powered automatic BB guns. Otherwise, normally I just love to hang out with my friends and watch movies. Though when I have the time and can afford to do so I'm a fanatic at the range and enjoy horseback riding. Used to do snorkeling and sailing, but here in California quite frankly.. THE WATER SUCKS!!

I'm a crafty one: I like to do delicate work and make things. Currently, I'm in a crazy beading/jewelry making phase. I've made some awesome stuff for pennies on the dollar of what you would pay for jewelry at stores.

Example: What would you pay for an aquamarine necklace at a store? Answer: about $100 for a 1 carat necklace. What did I pay for 50 carats of aquamarine briolette beads that will end up making my wedding necklace, earrings and the earrings of all 3 of my bridesmaids? $120!!

I also LOVE to cook, specifically bake! Here's a handy tip for anyone who wants to add pizazz to that boxed cake mix: Add cinnamon to chocolate cake mix (yum!!) or substitute the water with fruit juice with white cake mix.

I like this thread, it makes me feel like I'm not alone out there. 🙂 Anyway, I'm rob and I had quite a neat road to applying to medical school. In my past I have been a Red Cross instructor, paramedic, trained EMS, and I at one time taught and assited rewritting the training regulations of the guest relations departments of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The latter doesn't have a lot to do with medicine but it was fun and paid the bills between schooling. Right now I am finishing up my MPH at the University of Tennessee while I play the waiting game for medical school. As for any spare time I love to bike in the smokies and read for fun....and yes I admit I like the Harry Potter series. In fact the doctoral students in my classes made fun of me when I read book five in a day. Mmmmmmm maybe that was too much info to say. 🙂

Major endorphin junkie- i have a half ironman triathlon in one week that is scaring the bejesu out of me at the moment.

However, my ideal afternoon probably involves like 4 hours reading "great crap" as I care to call it (novels from clancy to clavell).

However, since i'm a senior my major passtime has been getting dragged to bars. Lots and lots of bars.

ps i did that too (had to visit my GF's friends so it was a weekend affair, but close enough - two sittings

Lots of exercising (as the name implies). I read books at every opportunity, I listen to music, I watch movies, I play video games (I agree with PianoGirl, Final Fantasy is the best!). I've done work as a lifeguard and a swim coach. Occasionally I fiddle with my computer, although I rarely do anything major unless I buy a new part. Weekends that I don't have a race I usually hang out with a few of my friends, or else go to a party and drink somebody under the table. I love the outdoors, things like camping and hiking, and generally anything that requires being active. Someday I want to skydive.

As for my personality, I'm generally the responsible, mature, and organized one of my friends. I'm the guy that my female friends go to for advice on other guys (yes, that makes me an intellectual *****-- see the ladder theory thread in the lounge). I'm fairly quiet most of the time, unless I actually have something thought-out to say, and I'm a good listener.

That's all for now, I'm feeling a little lethargic, it's been a busy day.

I finished Harry Potter Book 5 in two days, despite the fact that I was working full-time that week (I didn't get my hands on a copy until that Monday). Book 4 got polished off in one day, though, as did 3.

jefras99,

Mostly mind-centered and occasionally trance. I started in order to find a solution for my horrible mental game in tennis and have periodically kept it up since, usually around 20 minutes before bed, but some days I don't fit it in. Feels great though . . . even if it didn't completely cure my tennis woes.

I like this thread. It seems to take you mind off the whole application process, even if it's only for a moment. This thread also has the content and style that more of sdn threads should have, one of support and friendly conversation. I think that too many threads on this site deal with numbers and we all beat it into the ground because we are all neurotic about numbers and we all want to get our foot through that medical school door.

Anyway,

About myself.

My username is just my birth name (I was born in the Ukraine) and the fact that I am a fan of the New York Rangers. I am a crazy sports fan and try to go to as many games as my time and my bank account will let me. I also love movies and consider myself a movie-buff. Unlike many of the people that have posted on this thread, I really don't like to read. I love watching movies and feel that there is nothing like a well-acted dramatic or comedic scene that connects with you and/or makes you laugh. I sometimes get goosebumps when watching my favorite movie scenes. My favorites are The Shawshank Redemption, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Dumb and Dumber, I could go on forever. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate to read or feel like there is something wrong with anyone who loves it, but I need a book that I can really connect with and enjoy to keep reading it.

As far as my personality, I consider myself a funny, smart and respectful person. Still, sometimes (more like, many times) I act like a goofoff with my friends and sometimes wonder what my future patients would think if they see what their doctor-to-be has done or how he has acted. I am not exactly a party-goer and I don't like to go to clubs. I think the latter one has to do with the fact that white men just can't dance and if they think they can, they are sadly, sadly mistaken and should get off the dance floor as soon as possible. I love to make people laugh and have a good time. Unlike most of my friends, I hate beer and most other alcoholic drinks and usually look a bit childish when I order the "Pepsi" at a club.

That's all I can think of right now. I look forward to learning more about all of you.

Cool thread.

I love to read... love, love, love it! I'm currently reading several novels, including Pride and Prejudice, which I've owned for several years and now, I am making myself read it. I'm sure it will be good once I get into it. I read really intellectual things, but I also read trash magazines.

I like to pretend I'm an artist. I have all of my past sculpture and clay work, which even my mother doesn't display in her home. ha ha. I also fiddle around with oil pastels.

I like decorating. I went into IKEA a few weeks ago and could hardly contain myself as I ran around the store. I made/painted my own end table, lamp shade, and mirrors for my dorm.

I like power tools. My dad is a useless handyman and I have 3 useless sisters, so I'm always the one fixing things, assembling furniture, and using the big red tool box.

I have always had a strange aversion to killing insects. I go out of my way to capture bees, moths, or even spiders in ziploc bags or cups and set them free outside. I also look up any strange insects on the internet.

I love to dance and sing, but usually do both in the privacy of my room. I love to play the piano, but I refuse to play for anyone else... if I know someoneis listening, I instatnyl mess up, but I play beautifully for myself. 🙂

I enjoy working out, especially the elliptical machine. I hate running, but I love to walk, especially in the spring time.

Classical music evokes very strong feelings in me. The Bravehear soundtrack can bring me to tears.

I've never had a real date, or a kiss, or been in love, though not entirely by choice. This needs to be remedied.

I've been bitten by the travel bug and am always saving money to travel.

I love Disney World!

I collect Dr. Suess books.

I'm the black sheep in my family, even though on paper, I'm the child closest to being a parent's dream.

I don't curse, I don't drink (I've had 1/2 a glass of wine in my whole life), I'm a virgin, and I don't even masturbate (not that I'm saying it's bad). But I am surprisingly fun. 😀 (or so my friends say).

I think I've said enough.

OMG! You ARE me. I thought I was the last person left in the world who is like this! Thanks for mentioning this kind of stuff, b/c I would never have had the courage to spill my guts.
😍 😀

After my native guide was murdered by the rival tribe, I began to feel a bit despondent.

This is cool getting to know all the people I've been hanging out with in Pre-Allo.

Factoids about myself:

I'm a fifth year senior at the University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner!!!). I'm majoring in Microbiology, with a minor in Chemistry and History.

I got married when I was 19, and we celebrated our third anniversary in July.

I was born in Scotland and lived there for 4 years.

I love to football, and even played it in high school. I was a 150 lb. offensive lineman. 😀

My hobbies: I like to read, watch movies, play video games (here's another vote for Final Fantasy!), and I love most kinds of music most of the time.

I really enjoy a good beer.

I'm kind of silly sometimes.

I'm driving for 13 hours to Alabama this weekend for the OU-Alabama game. Go Sooners!!!

I grew up in a very small town in Southeastern Oklahoma.

I'm obsessive-compulsive about my time management and my schedule. I plan things waaaaay too much. (I have an itinerary for the aforementioned trip).

That's about all I can think of. 😀

Hmm, I was feeling sort of lazy too, but then I read dimitrinyr's post, and I just had to add mine.

I was born in Ukraine too; I moved to the US with my parents when I was 8. I also really love the Rangers, actually, even though I live in Jersey. I play Ice Hockey, and I used to skate - I guess the ice is just in my blood 🙂. I really enjoy working out, and I'm actually somewhat of an outdoors enthusiast. I do a lot of rock climbing, and have gotten into mountaineering over the years. I actually just came back from Alaska, where I climbed in the Kenai range for two weeks. I'm hoping to go ice climbing in Lake Placid this winter, but we'll see...

I'm a philosophy major, so I love reading and arguing 🙂. I especially like reading sci fi.... but that's all I'm going to say to avoid sounding too geeky 🙂. At some point, I would like to buy a motorcycle and ride cross-country... but again, we'll see. I play a little piano, like to write short stories/poetry, and am obsessed with Fox News. Well, that's probably all you ever wanted to know about me and then some 🙂

I'm a klutz. My toes are feeling the wrath of my condition... I tripped over my text books not too long ago.

I like long walks on the beach, puppies, knitting and dancing in the moonlight while listening to Barry Manilow's greatest hits!
😀

P.S. I never wear white after Labor Day!

This is a great idea!

I live in San Francisco, which is a city which completely contradicts the stereotype that California is always sunny, where everybody surfs, and people walk around in swimwear. If you walked around in a bikini is SF, you're just asking for an early death.

I work full-time in a lab during the day too, and also do secondaries at night. Sometimes, I watch the OC, Gilmore Girls, CSI, Law & Order SVU, and/or Jeopardy! when I want to relax.

My friends and I are Taboo! addicts. We go through about a box of cards per sitting. Hehe.

I try to attend operas, ballets, and musicals as often as possible, although I usually can't afford to do that more than 5-6 times/year. Favorite opera: La Traviata. Favorite ballet: Manon Favorite musical: Rent

I hate exercising, except for the occasional swim. And the only machine I'll use at the gym is the Precor.

I also read Harry Potter 5 over two days, but I read books 1-4 together within a week.

Oops, gotta go, CSI is on! ^_^

I've never had a real date, or a kiss, or been in love, though not entirely by choice. This needs to be remedied.

Maybe WE need to look into that😀 😍 😀

BEETLEVH : ahhhh a med student who works on cars.. now thats interesting. i love working on cars too. and using my hands to fix things. strange that we choose medicine though. from people who love blue collar work who is pursuing such a white collar job.

Thundrstorm: i wouldnt say not dating or not having sex or masturbating is a bad thing. oddly enough though, as luck would have it, not allot of girls respect themselves like you do. keep it up.

I'm a pretty new member to SDN. You guys are truly an amazing bunch. Very diverse group of people with different interests, but one common goal--medical school! Very cool.

Here's a little about me:

I grew up in Southern California (Newport), but when it came down to college...this westside girl was kicked over to the eastside. I'm currently a senior at Princeton, majoring in Biochemistry. Go Tigers! I'm the youngest child in a family of 4 children. My parents are both physicians, so i guess medicine has always been in our blood. I'm applying to a total of 15 schools, mostly my state schools. I have completed all of my secondaries and sent them in 3 weeks ago...so i'm just waiting on interviews.

At school, I'm actively involved in research. I have 1 publication as first author, and I'm trying to crank another one out before graduation time. Asides from research, i'm also actively volunteering for the Red Cross as a Board member, pastoral care, and tutoring/mentoring at-risk teen who are currently in prison.

I love to play the piano, pool, and tennis. I love cats and SEXY MEN...oops did i say that outloud...

Go Tigers!

I am a bloke.

As you can tell by the name I am an avid herpetologist and plan on conducting studies on amphibians and reptiles both during and after medical school. I currently spend my days at a pharmaceutical company in QAL development and drive directly to my other job as a Big Brown Bat rabies researcher at night. No, I don't sleep much because I feel it a burden in life. I also work out regularly, and with any free time love backcountry hiking, traveling to national parks and forests, guitar, snowboarding, volunteering at animal sanctuaries and kayaking.

As for my personality I am a very strong minded and firm in my beliefs, although not so much so that I am not open to change. I am confident in who I am and not afraid of confrontation or as I prefer to call it, intellectual bantering. I am a quick witted individual and am constantly pushing my physical and intellectual boundaries. I have accepted the fact that I will never be satisfied in life and love hard work (strange as it may seem) which means I am always looking for something new to add to my repertoire of weekly duties.

Hi all-I've got a lot in common with a lot of you:

My toes are feeling the wrath of my condition too-I just restarted ballet classes en pointe after a year off and my poor feet are really not liking me right now!

Read Harry Potter #5 in a day (tho I kind of had to before my daughter got home and got her hands on it...)

Also constantly pushing my intellectual and physical boundaries and love hard work (tho I'm satisfied with life right now, I love change and get bored quickly if I'm not advancing somehow!)

A little more about me...

I was a teenage mother who is currently volunteering at the local junior high working with at-risk girls to help steer them away from my fate. It's been a lot of hard work to get here and I'm finally back in college at age 27, but I've learned A LOT along the way. I went to college seven years ago for accounting, worked in the field for five years and realized how much I hated it. So I decided to pursue my first passion...

I like reading anything I can get my hands on, going out boating (tubing, waterskiing, I'm currently beginning on a wakeboard), racing my car, dancing (ballet, pointe, and jazz), and I'm starting to get involved in the science club and student government at school. I've got a CNA license but can't find a job to work around my school and family schedules so work will have to wait...

My husband is also returning to college at night while working full time days, so our family is really crazy! He's an auto mechanic who's majoring in business administration-he wants to go into consulting. I'm not surprised that the mechanics among you want to be doctors, it's essentially doing the same thing except on people instead of cars....he'd do it too except he can't stand blood and gore😉

My kids are involved in hip-hop dance, swimming, and tae kwon do. I'd love to learn tae kwon do myself, but I just don't have time right now. Although I've only got a few years left to do pointe work in ballet (I'm getting too old!), so I may take that up then.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know, but such is my life (in between all of these lovely science classes!)😀

They call me Big Evil.

I'm new to this forum, so I thought this would be a good place to start. I'm from Long Island and I am a biology major with a minor in cognitive science at a university in Philadelphia. I'm applying to both MD and DO schools. Right now I am interested in becoming a forensic pathologist. I spent the past summer interning at a Medical Examiner's office and had a lot of fun while learning a lot. Neurology also interests me. If I don't get into med school I would consider a career with the FBI or in forensics. I would also consider going to graduate school and doing some research.

I enjoy skiing and reading true crime books. I like books about the forensic sciences. Forensic entomology has recently become interesting to me.

I also enjoy going to concerts and listening to music. I listen to all sorts of music, but I have a special affinity for heavy metal. I like watching sports (NY teams: giants, mets, knicks, and rangers). I like going to low-key bars (i.e. no loud obnoxious people, no techno music or annoying dancing) and drinking socially. I mostly drink beer, but have recently began liking the taste of jagermeister.

Yikes!!! Jager was my first drink ever. eight months later, I was waking up at about 8pm on Saturday night to start studying (I was working nights at the time). My roommate had his friend over, and they were planning to drink. I made a joke about going shot-for-shot against my roommate's friend, but not seriously. Next thing I knew, my roomate offered $100 to the winner, so I downed half of a 750mL bottle of Jager (on an empty stomach, and within about 20 minutes), and finally won by moving on to the bottle of Jose Cuervo (my opponent had had a bad experience w/ tequila). That' the only night I've ever not remebered the night before. I woke up in the bathroom doorway with rugburns on my arms, and made up for the HW time by ditching my crappy job on Monday (I wouldn't have made $100 that day, and my bosses were jerks).

But I'm actually not much of a drinker--had my first drink at the age of 22, and at the ripe old age of 26, I'm pretty much done with getting drunk. It's fun, but overrated.

I like to rap freestyle, I used to street luge (68 mph is my top speed), and I like dancing to techno. Camping and travelling are great, when I have the time/money to.

But mostly, I'm a nerd (aren't most all of us?) who watches PBS, I love museums (art, history, science...you name it), and I read plenty. I'm also a pathological Simpsons quoter, so for the love of God, don't get me started.

BONUS QUESTION: Does anyone know what's special about Nutmeg among the spices in your kitchen?

Thankfully Jager is known as a stomach soother.

I too am a "pathological" simpsons fan. I also want to ring the neck of the person at Fox who is responsible for cancelling Family Guy.

Family guy is one of the best cartoons ever. At least we have the box sets and reruns on televison. 🙁

Hey everyone, I finally read through this whole thread. It's been really cool to read about everyone. I started reading/posting on SDN when I started studying for the April 2002 mcat, and followed last year's applicant's process... and now i'm applying. I'm really excited to see how we all do, follow everyone's process, and share the joy when we get in.

I'm 26 and live in NYC. Been here for about 8 years. I love the city -- it's the best city to live in, leave from, and come back to.

I love to cook and host dinner parties for my friends. I love to run at sunset in Central Park at the reservoir, although now I live near the Cloisters/Fort Tryon Park. I love just walking around the city and discovering more about the city in general. I'm a closet artist and paint acrylics when the inspiration comes. I hang out with my best friend & roommate often and we like to go see movies (she's an actress and I manage her career) and hang out in the city in general.

I like learning about new things, I can't stay stagnant.

And lastly for some background info, I was born in South Korea, moved here when I was barely 2. I have a younger brother who is a sports reporter - he recently covered the US Open and is the press guy for NY Metrostars (soccer team) for his newspaper. My mom and bro live nearby in NJ, my dad is currently in Seoul, Korea and just recently started a church project that he has been planning for years (he's a minister). As for my personality, hmm. People describe me as initially shy & reserved, but confident. But then if you get to know me I do have a crazy/wild side that not many ppl see. I'm one of those crazy planning/organizational freaks but I've lightened up recently.

OK that's enough about me. Let's hear from more of you.

Wow, this thread really is a great idea. I've been picking up pieces from reading everyones' posts for a while, but i'ts cool to get the whole image!

I'm a lit major who did my undergrad at MIT, and currently work as a research tech. I went to MIT having left school after 10th grade to take care of my dad, who had fallen ill, and support my family. I've done Tae Kwon Do & Aikido for a total of about 12 years.

I love football (oh, I'm a girl, but with my family the girls are about 10x as aggressive as the guys when it comes to football 😉 ). My cousins are both much younger than I am, and the youngest (11 yo girl) just moved on from her desire to be a professional football player -- she's great; tackles me on every play, whether or not I'm on the same team and/or not holding the ball) and wants to be a nurse. The 13yo boy cousin wants to be a physicist and go to MIT. Their mom is going to start studies for her associates in nursing next term (yay! you gotta admire that sort of commitment to education).

Big hobbie: brewing beer. I've just cracked open the first bottles of a Belgian White and hoppy ale, which turned out great. A friend and I brewed an Indian Pale Ale yesterday, and it looks and smells great in the fermenter today. Next project: Belgian Sour Ale (I know sour ale ain't a big thing here... but I really like it, and it'll be done just in time for next summer).

Nice to meet all of you! Wow, what a great crowd!

Anka

This is fantastic! There are a few people whom I thought were the opposite sex of what they really are, just based on their posts.

I didn't find SDN until after the April MCAT, thankfully, otherwise I would have spent a lot of my study time on here instead of studying.

I'm 28. I live in Brooklyn, near Prospect Park. I was born in Berkeley, grew up in NY suburbs, returned to Berkeley for college and now I'm back in NY. Presently I work as a nutritionist in the South Bronx. I've been at this job for 5 months, before that I worked in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Now, I work with a fantastic, committed bunch of providers. My commute sucks, but my fiancee and I will be moving to Queens soon and my commute will be halved.

I've spent the summer trying to get a mortgage in addition to completing secondaries. It's been the poorest, dullest summer I have had in years. But I have been trying to get out to do things that I love to relieve stress and have fun. I went hiking yesterday. We went to Breakneck Ridge, which I hadn't done since I was 18. My body hurts today. And I recently started taking dance classes, jazz, and that's great too. Luckily I am old enough that I don't mind making an a$s out of myself.

I love food, which is why I became an nutritionist. I don't just love eating, I get excited thinking about heirloom tomato season, where to get authentic mole, and which continent peppers originated. It is an obsession. But I don't know the answer to Nutmeg's question.

I've got 3 sisters, one older, 2 younger. One of my younger sisters lives in Oakland but the rest of us are in NY, along with my parents. It's just us here, the extended family mostly lives in North Africa.

I made the decision to apply 2 years ago. I had toyed with the idea for a long time before that but I announced it to myself and everyone else then. I love my job, but it isn't as stimulating as I thought it would be. I had to return to school to take physics which is where i met my fiancee, in physics class. In my case, the cliche about finding love when you are least looking rings true. Had I not decided to become a doctor we never would have met. Because of him I have confined my list to a smaller geographic area, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

It is great meeting everyone. Good luck with your applications!

Hi,

It's great reading all these posts. A definite good break.

I am an older student with 2 kids. I have already graduated and this is the second time I have applied to med school. I was accepted to one school and waitlisted at another. Due to presonal family reason I gave up my acceptance and was going to get my Master's in Microbiology, but the medicine bug is too strong of a virus to fight. So I am back in the application cycle.

I love to go kayaking, beachcombing, hiking with my husband and kids. We have two Golden Retrievers and are pretty laid back type of people. Might sound boring to you young folks not in your 30's like me.

Oh, and I have returned to SDN after a year away. Unfortunetly I have become addicted to it again. I guess I fell off the SDN wagon and lost my addiction fight. There goes my one year pin. 😀 😀 😀

This is my first message on this great board 🙂

Hmmmm so a few stuff about me :

I am 21 year olds. I grew up in NYC in a very loving alternative family with 2 brothers. Due to a merit based scholarship i found myself in WashU in StLouis where i am a senior. I am definately an urban person and i miss NY a lot but i have enjoyed my college life in St.Louis a lot.

I love music, concerts and i am a movie buff 🙂 . The last 5 movies that i saw were : Le Divorce (didn't enjoy it as much as i thought i would), Thirteen (loved it), Swimming Pool (hmm), Whale Rider (loved it) and The Magdalene Sisters.

I enjoy a lot hanging out with friends and enjoy great food and wine (but then again who doesn't? 😛 ). I have been doing water polo for 9 years now and like every girl on this planet i love shopping 🙂.

I think that my new addiction is gonna be this website 😛

nice to meet you all.

my two favorite things to do are snowboard and play poker. i wish it snowed everyday all year long. playing poker is like a second job for me and i've gotten to the point where i analyze everyone that i talk to and try to guess exactly what they're thinking. mostly all of my money goes to dvd's. my collection is almost at 100.

i have a really crappy retail job right now but at least i get to work with my best friends everyday. i'm currently in desperate search of a lab job. cheers everyone

Hehehe...my feelings exactly. Welcome to the forums! I just discovered this place a few days ago and I'm already addicted. "Hi, my name is Jen, and I'm a SDNaholic..."

So you go to Wash U...I'm seriously considering it for med school. I've applied and it's one of my top choices, both because it has an excellent program and because they offer a lot of merit scholarships. How is life in St. Louis? Is there a lot to do?

Whale Rider was so great, I'm going to be really pissed if the Academy doesn't give it its due!!

Definitely wanted to see Whale Rider...saw a preview for it when I was watching Bend it Like Beckham. I also wanted to see Winged Migration, but I don't think I'll get the chance to see either.

If y'all haven't seen it yet, you have to see the 25th Hour, that movie is AWESOME...

but then again, I'm really into Spike Lee movies, saw Clockers last night and that was also pretty good (though not as good as 25th Hour, Ed Norton is genius)

Hmmm about St. Louis. I grew up in NYC so when i came here i was initially shocked but now i am over it 😛 .

WashU is a fantastic school. Nice location and great people.

As far as the city goes. The medical school is located in an area called the Central West End. I lived there for 2 years. It is somewhat an upscale area but by St.Louis standarts upscale means around 700$ for an 1-2 bedroom in a nice location. There are plenty of coffee houses, bookstores and great restaurants. The people are mainly students from all shorts of backrounds.

It depends how you define " a lot to do". StLouis has some nice clubs which close down at 2:00-3:00 AM and everyone goes to East StLouis (not a nice place to be) after that where everything is open until 6:00 AM. There is a great Symphony Hall and a lot of bands come through StL. If you are into dining there are plenty of great restaurants at bargain prices. Great Italian and Asian food.
There are a couple of cinemas that play international/indie films which i really enjoy too.

It is a city where u need a car but if u live in the West End/ Clayton area chances are that you won't need one (who wants out to the suburbs anyway?).

Anything more specific , feel free to ask 🙂

Thanx a bunch, Tezzie! The comment about needing a car was especially helpful, since I have to decide whether or not to bring my car wherever I go (or to buy a crappy old one that I won't care about). Now to go about getting an interview there...I'm pretty confident about it (and they actually sent me a letter after the MCAT scores were released, inviting me to apply), but you never know.

Wow... I'm glad to see that my delerious 3am idea of starting a post to get to know everyone here was not such a terrible idea! 🙂 By the way I forgot to mention I'm a 22 year old male undergrad majoring in Physiology and Neurobiology (sophomore... took time off)

Kmnfive- I have to say one thing, I have not found many people at all who share my interests and passions in the pre-med community. Its interesting though because a lot of the people who responded to this post talk about things that could be considered their own form of art. To me, thats what was most interesting to read about you all.

I guess my "canvas" just happens to be whatever I'm building, usually a car. I think that a vehicle is such an excellent sample of its historical era. Think about it; everything from its engine to the exterior color is a testament to the consumer tastes, tools, and economic condition present during its production. Man, I could go on all day talking about cars so I won't bore you all with it. 😉

I'd hate to say this after not wanting to talk about med school in this post, but my concern for some time now has been that although this hobby has been much more than simple greasy auto mechanics to me, its not easy trying to get people (i.e. med schools) to understand that. Ah well, in the meantime I'm going to get back to my physics and calc.... I look forward to reading more about you all.

I rode the short bus to school, but momma always told me I was special.
