A friend of mine who got accepted to TCOM and AZCOM is wondering if TCOM requires a drug test before entering the first year. He mentioned that AZCOM's policy is to drug test but wasn't sure about TCOM's policy. I told him I'd post a message on this board. Any one know the answer?

I am not sure about those respective schools, but I am just wondering...is it a real concern for your friend if a drug test IS required? Usually people who care about the drug test are the ones who do drugs. Anyhow, aren't you attending TCOM in the Fall? Did they mention any drug testing for your matriculation? Just curious.... Sorry, I couldn't be much helpful!!

Good luck to your friend!!!

Yes, I will be attending TCOM this August; that's why my friend asked me. But I was never concerned about drug tests to really pay attention. So far, I don't recall hearing anything about it.

I don't know if it's a 'real concern' for my friend, but what you said makes a whole lotta sense to me too.

Still, can anyone else shed light on this topic?

If they require a drug test, they likely will require that you have one taken at your convenience provided it is done by a certain deadline set by the school. If your friend has a 'real concern' based on one isolated incident, he just read up on his toxicology to find out how long a particular substance will show in the urine (most of the time 3 days max., maybe 5 to 8 for onetime marijuana use). If he has an actual substance abuse problem, then obviously school can wait, and he needs to address his own health problems.

Well, I asked my friend, and he said this is his way of going crazy before he hunkers down in med school.

I want to say to him, "That's what they all say!", but he could be speaking the truth. I guess I'll just tell him that I do not know.

Don't do drugs. Drugs are bad.

AZCOM requires drug tests! But I agree with the rest here. If this is a real issue with your friend he has a much bigger problem than trying to decide which school to go to.
Get high on life, its much more pleasureable, and no residuals!

well, my friend decided to go to AZCOM; he's from AZ so it wasn't a big surprise. i told him not to do drugs. and that drugs are bad.

Drug Tests?!?!?! Gosh, that totally blows!! Thank God there are no drug tests at NYCOM! I mean really....what med student has not tried pot at least once in his/her life?? After all, we are going to be doctors, and just may be prescribing some spleef to our patients....so it is a good idea that we know what it is like to take a nice bong full inhale of the wonderful Columbian smoke. And even if we were not going to be physicians, I am sure that most of us out there enjoy the music of Pink Floyd or King Crimson, and what better way to enjoy the splendors of Floyd, than to lie in bed with a nice fatty blunt in your slippery mits. So why don't all of you fearful and goodie-two-shoes types mellow out, grab some green herb, and pass the time with a nice smoking bowl.

or if you wanna take a more depressing view, kids who were seniors in high school are about just finished with a surgical fellowship.

Or an equally depressing view:I was a senior in 2001 and I am just finishing M2 this spring!

People who were in middle school when this was written are now interns.

Alternatively, people who were in middle school back then are now Tom Hanks

EDIT: Just realized this is my 2,900th post. Definitely a worthy post for a post divisible by 100. Every 100 post I actually have something interesting to say.

Did SDN exist back then? I thought the internet consisted of only AOL back in those days.

Back then the internet was AOL, Yahooligans!, PBS: Nova, About 13 porn sites, and Lee sitting around answering questions (naked).

And it was all made possible by this little magnificent bastard:
