Drug tests for GPR/AEGD/Specialties?

Hey guys..alright before everyone makes a big deal out of the question..i was just wondering for a friend, ehem, if GPR/AEGD/Speciality programs do drug tests for incoming residents. If so, do they do a urine test? hair test? Would they do it at the interview or before starting? Again, just informative responses and no bashing..simples yes's or no's will do..thanks peoples..😎

We had a urine test during orientation at our residency. This was probably moreso for getting cleared for employment in the hospital.

Drug testing is mandatory at most residencies I am familiar with, and is done at orientation. Fail and you are out, no questions asked, no excuses.

you'll test positive for opiates in general (just as you would if you took a narcotic analgesic). to test positive specifically for heroin (also an opiate) you test for a special metabolite, which won't show up with poppy seeds. so you can't blame your heroin habit on a couple of bagels.

To differentiate between heroine and poppy seeds they can test for a metabolite called monoacetylmorphine. In the past this test was very technique sensitive and extremely hard to interpret the results. However, new assays that are available make it relative simple and straight forward.

So relax poppy seed eaters!
