150k to attend state school? now that's something. does anyone remember what the thing is about with third year? I remember "someone" said something about earning money during the third year or something even though we still have to pay for full tuition, clarify if you know plz.....
my debt runs at 6k right now because I just bought a car (yup, it was alll my saving and i'm darn proud of it)

From the interview day I believe they said you have to pay tuition regardless. If you do research you can potentially earn (I think) close the tuition amount depending on the amount of the stipend/grant. However, if you try to get another degree like MPH, MBA, etc it costs medical school tuition plus a certain amount? for that degree (I think?)

i think the certain amount for the dual degree is a very negligible amount like a few hundred bucks for administrative fees or something. i think i heard this from that third year girl at 2nd look... melissa?

thanks y'all for the responses; i'll have to see if getting an MBA will be that worth it in the end.

Rock on for saying y'all!

lol, well lucky i didn't post a pic of me wearing cowboy outfit to this year rodeo like the ones in kirexhana's avatar. i'm pretty sure that I will attend Duke now, unless some girl here in Houston wants to marry me, then I'll just be bewildered.

I'll marry you if you can get me off the waitlist. I'm tall, fairly slender, curly haired- I have a rather large nose, but that can be taken care of 😉 My hobbies include long walks on the beach, etc., etc.

As far as being fo sho: Yep. I'm fo sho. I've got the word from Philip-the-Politician, Dionne, Andy (Chad), and good old Krishn (with the permasweater) that they are too. Good group, eh Rex? 😀

::EDIT:: Cowboys? Cowboys!!! I can't imagine there being too many long walks on the beach happening in Durham but I'll settle for some trail riding myself. Anyone need some breaking in? *whipcrack*

the group? hot stuff and... you + a whip? hotter stuff 😉 😛 i'm just sorry i can't truly appreciate you in that way.

HA!

We'll leave that to Krishn (awwww) or Andy (hey, I can daydream can't I?). . . Andy definitely seems into the ladies, as evidenced by his activities post-Players on Saturday night. Tee hee!

I'm such a gossip-monger.

yea, not much into guys that are shorter than me. that and the fact that i don't think Andy's into guys... doesn't help much...(thinking otherwise...now THAT"s daydreaming). were there any that seemed remotely gay? or am i the token boy who into other boys?

and gossip is healthy, it's going to make us into the most dysfunctional family ever. so on that note, you wouldn't happen to know who he left with would you?

well i dont think that i can help you out much there missy (if that's your REAL, god-given natural gender), but even if i can get you off that waitlist, you'll be flirting with all the other fine gentlemen at Duke & Durham while leaving poor ol me in the soliatry coldness. And with that description of yourself mem, I can't help but picturing a tall brunette clown (add in the red nose) walking an imagary dog along the seashore :meanie: .
Also, people in this thread seems to know one another so i'm feeling A BIT left out.

just say your first name, show me a picture (cowboy preferably) and i'll be your best friend. 🙂

Rex - don't remember her name but she was an M1 (I think) with long brown hair; she was wearing a V-neck cream sweater and her hair was in a bun at the brunch.

Tee, sorry the rest of ya. We'll stop the insider gossip!

Which lender are y'all using for your financial aid? I'm still debating.

I called about this yesterday. The office told me about 50% use Duke and 50% use Medloans. She said using Medloans is preferable if you are borrowing more than just Stafford loans. I got great grant $$ [the ONE time in my life I liked being working class], so I am just using Duke as my lender.

i guess i must cross this bridge of shame one day, might as well be now. *take a deep breath* *recite/read the notecard prepared for whenever meeting new people*
YO *ahem* my name is bond, james bond 😀 (Ooooo MI3 is coming out next friday!!!!) anywho, i'm kevin, real name is too hard to say, but friends call my TK for the lazy online chatting people, K-Dog for all the wannabes, manwhore for the many lady friends I have, Andre for the french people. I'm 100% FOB. Tall and slender (when was the last time a guy decribes himself using slender?!) I like to enjoy to finer things in life, such as fine dining (not mickey D, or fast food places), fine drinking, and any kind of sport-ing (golf, tennis, football, drafting, rock climbing), it's a "I live to eat, and I eat to live" kind of thing. At the rate I'm going, I think i will end up with a gold-digger (anyone know that song?)

i dont want to think of financial aid right now, it's just too depressing. if i borrow 152k unsubsidized, how much interest will it be by the time i pay back?

Tennis? We have to play when we get there! I am not nearly as good as I'd like to be, but we still have to play!

game on partner, let's see if you can hit my 1 mile per hour serve. Maybe later, I can convert you to be my golfing buddy as well as all other outdoor activities that i like.

tennis? YAY! we should have a match! i suck, but it's ok, we can play doubles 😉

HI KEVIN! *obnoxious wave* I'm Gemma.

I. . .run. . .

And ride horses. . .

I guess none of these are really team or partner sports. HEY! Is anyone else thinking of joining the IM Med Soccer team(s)?! I'd be totally down for that. Or rugby. We could take on those darn Columbia kids. Or actually inner tube water polo might be fun (Yes it's a real IM sport apparently).

And as far as lenders; yeah, I'm borrowing not only Sub + Unsub Staffords but also a whole pile of Grad PLUS (like $15k/year) which means I'm definitely using Medloans. Better benefits, no?

i haven't researched into lenders, so if i can skip that part, it would be nice. I have both sub and unsub and I think that will be enough for me. So where is the best place i should beg to borrow money, my credit score, as of a month ago was 723 (not bad eh?).
I always like the idea of horse back riding, but never did have the opportunity (or money for that matter) to do it. I guess riding horse beats running when it's time for those lenders to chase after me and demand their money back.

HA HA! And hey, I can golf as well! I just am pretty bad at it! Actually, my golf clubs came from a yard sale, but I still love the game.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you the spreadsheet I made re: lenders. (Origination fees, benefits, rates, etc.) As UT said before, if you're not getting additional loans above the Staffords you may as well just go with the Duke Sallie Mae program, but if you're going for more than that (like it seems you might) then Medloans works out to be better. I've included those two plus medpreferred and any info I could find re: B of A and the Access Group but neither of those were very forthcoming with any real information. So yeah; PM me and I'll send you what I found.

Yes I am a nerd. I'll be the one sending out typed notes before every exam. 😀

That IS a good credit score! Congrats. Plenty of my friends haven't even got a single credit card, let alone a 700+ FICO. My parents got on my back about mine when I was about 18 so I've been building it since then. 801 at last check! We'll see if it stays that way. . .

Ok, enough nerdliness for one morning - I had seriously better get to class. Silly molecular bio.

Hmm. Maybe running away isn't the best idea. I think we could come up with a good solution to our "lender" problem using those golf clubs. . . 👍

hahaha, i like that idea already. but 801 score, geesh whiz, what's the limit on your credit card? maybe one day, I can charge a whole house into one credit card and hopefully get 5% cashback, hihihihi...

since we're doing introductions, hey kevin, i'm rex. i like good food too! and i exercise sporadically 😳 . shopping, video games, running 👍 , very interested in fine drinking, but i'd need some assistance in that 😉 .

I have two credit cards, $2k limit each (one platinum plus Mastercard, one regular old Visa) and ne'er a late payment. The Visa I've had for 4 years, the Mastercard for just over a year. I used to have a Gapcard and a VS card which I only used sporadically but I recently cancelled them both. Have had a phone with Verizon for 4 years, no late payments. No car payments ever. I think it's the 4-year-old Visa that helps me out so much, though. I use that for groceries so it almost always has a $500+ balance which is paid off completely every month.

Fine drinking? Fine drinking?! HAHAHAHA. Come to my parents house. As a matter of fact, I'm planning on throwing a bit of a get together in early August at my parents house (where I'll be living for a good 6 months or so) and we can all be regaled by my father's "I used to work in the beer industry" stories and char up some cowflesh for eats. He likes to tell people he travelled around the world drinking beer, which is not COMPLETELY true, but it's a fair elaboration. We have a huge backyard, a nice big barbeque, a patio I helped to build (with a perfectly level wall that I DID build, mind you), darts, ping-pong, various bottles of booze, and my parents are quite the hosts. Dad might even share some of his scotch and show off his motorcycle. 😀 (Me, I'm partial to vodka tonics). Further information to be determined at a later date, but let it be known that we'll be invading that house fairly frequently.

Rex, I think I can help.

I think we can all help with that, we can even have a bartending contest too, but your drink got to be original and hopefully not toxic/poison.
And anyone know why someone just digged up the previous year Duke thread?

Gemma, does this mean you're living with your parents for the 1st semester? or does 6 months end when school starts?

living with parents save money, i would if i could *sniff* wouldn't have to cook either

First semester or so. I'm planning on buying a townhouse in January or so with some $$ I've saved up from working + grad present + whatever I save on food/rent/etc from my loans while living with Mom & Dad. $200k debt is easier to swallow when you're paying a mortgage with some it instead of a lease.

Hopefully my good credit will help me out there too, eh?

Bartending contests sounds like fun, although I highly doubt there's much out there that one can make that's truly "original". Drunkies think of everything! But Rex, I gotta say. . . if it costs more than $20 a bottle, you simply can't insult it with juice. 😀

considering the amount of money we're getting, i don't know if we can afford more than 20 a bottle. i'll bring the juice... 😉 😛

and trying to be original... i wonder if spiked boba tea would taste good... it'd be like an asian jello shot, i'd imagine.

I was actually thinking the other day about lime jello with tequila in it. Margarita shots! Ya think?

any of y'all ave ever tried green tea + saki? and green tea and something else, it tasted nasty yo

oooh.... rum + rootbeer floats! THAT's gotta be creative. yea.. green tea isn't sweet by itself, so adding alcohol wouldn't make it taste very good either. but speaking of tea. would it be insulting to sweet tea to make it "sweeter"?

wait... kevin... did you not go to 2nd look?... cuz i do remember a tall kevin there.

Being from TN, I will have to suggest the standard Jack and Coke. That drink has carried me through many football games!

On a totally separate note: I know I won't get a scholarship to Duke, but do you guys know if they have handed them out yet? I want to wishdraw from WashU bad so that someone else might get in as early as possible [since I know I am going to Duke]. However, if scholarships have not been handed out, I would hate to hand in the last acceptance I am still holding onto other than Duke.

there are scholarships to be handed out? :scared:

I haven't heard of anyone getting any so far. . . I think we've ALL got our fingers crossed!

oiy, scholarships *remind me of this silly mistake i made this morning when i thought I receive a full ride to Southwestern, when it was another school that I forgot to withdraw from* But this evening, I calculated my estimated financial crisis and it doesn't look good at all. so these are the numbers to give you guys a rough ideas: if i borrow $28600 each year for four years with interest at 6.8% fixed during those years, in addition to the 8500k subsidized loan for 4 years, So at the end of my fourth year assuming I didn't make a single payment, i will owe $169991. Assuming interest will be at 8% after med school and it takes me 5 years to pay it all off then just interest is still 70k-80k (amount owe at the end of 5 years would be around 250k). Now all these numbers are the worse that could happen since interest will go down as we make payments and we can always consolidate loans once we graduate. Just a thought guys.
But Rex, I didn't attend 2nd look mainly because of flight ticket back then was like $4-500 and the opportunity cost was too great to forgo. Kevin is a popular name, and I chose that name because I thought it would be easier for people to call me by even though it's not my official name. But my "real" name is Trung, which in vietnamese means loyal, faithful, and it's the name of a vietnamese king before the french came and took over indo-china. hihihi, that was long but kinda worth reading if you're attending Duke and will be my future classmate.
Now onto my problem (we all have some problems): many guys are reserve and quiet about his personal life and I'm no difference, but it has driven me crazy so I need to vent to strangers who can care less about my life. Eversince I have received all my rejections and acceptances, I have narrowed it down to 2 schools, Duke and Southwestern. I have been thinking and rethinking about Southwestern because it's in Dallas and well, someone whom I like and have been going out with will be there also. Now pre-med guys and relationship haven't always gotten along so well eversince we know it, but I didn't quite follow or believe in that trend until now, guess my life was all rosey for the past 21 years. Truly, I can care less about the curriculum at Southwestern (apology to the future Southwestern people who somehow reading this), so my only reasons for going to Southwestern would be 1. for a girl, and 2. closer to family in Houston. Have talked to family and they are fine with me moving to North Carolina for Duke, talking to all friends, and they are fine with me moving to Duke, have talked to "the girl" and she wants me to go to Dallas. I'm a bit silly to thinking of going to Dallas just for someone who I might date if I attend Dallas. So how are you guys/gals doing with your personal life? all good and smooth, nice, I envy you hihihihi...

may 15 is not here yet, but I just want to be the first to say, "To us, the duke class of 2010, congratulations for getting this far, cheers."

😛 well, how long have you known this girl? because relationships come and go. not only for med students but for many other people as well. a duke education will last forever (the debt as well 😉 ) someone i met at second look (who i WISH were going, but alas, she's discovered the wonders of san diego sun) is moving across country when her bf of 5 years is going to be working in GA (that's georgia, not california). she's willing to fly for 6 hours once in a blue moon to visit him, so that she can go to a school she likes.

also, the way you're talking about it, it kinda sounds like things haven't even started between you two. DON'T pull a felicity and go to a school just because you think you will end up with her. cuz if things go bad, you'll be unhappy and also, you'll be unhappy near her.

to sum things up, a girl makes for a bad reason to choose a school. i'd say come to duke. 🙂
EDIT: wow, i sound like a bastard.... i meant it in a nicer way than it reads

pull a felicity? i heard of the show but never had the femininity (the heck is that?) to watch it willingly...
on the note of fine drinking, I just remembered the sole reason why I bought my PDA a year ago: to store mixing recipes for drink!!!!! and sadly, i only have about 10 mixes in the darn thing.

girl follows her crush to college. eh s'ok, you didn't miss out on much, the premise kinda sucked. 😎

Wow, that is neat you're considering UTSW and Duke. I am going to Duke, but my roommate is going to Southwestern! Personally, I would come to Duke. I have never been to UTSW, but it seems to have a bad rap for being a miserable place to go to school. I don't like to talk about schools I have never attended, but with their grading system, it seems sort of intense. Also, Duke has a really neat curriculum and a much easier grading scale. Plus, it's Duke!!!

As for the relationship part, I have been in a similar situation throughout the past year. I have been in a relationship with the same girl since I was a sophmore in high school. She was applying to clinical psych PhD programs this year, and I was obviously applying to med schools. She was accepted to a clinical PhD program here at UT [after initially being told she was rejected!]. After much soul searching about what she really wants to do with her life and what she thinks will make her happy, she has decided to come with me and pursue a masters of education. We just recently got engaged too! So I think staying in Dallas for the sake of a relationship could be worth it, but only if it is a very serious relationship. Do not change your direction for someone you MIGHT be with in the future. It really just depends on the nature of the relationship. That being said, feel free to ignore that advice completely b/c I know firsthand how annoying it is having people tell you what to do with your life. Good luck with the decision!
