Anyone else have the impression these schools have been sucked into a black hole? SLU was one of my first secondaries, way back in early August, and I even sent them a SASE, but still not a word, even as to whether my app is complete. And not a word from Jefferson or Mt. Sinai either. All 3 have cashed my checks.

I sent the secondary to SLU in late Aug and got an interview invite from them in mid-october. But I never got a appl. complete verification from them. I havent heard from them since my 11/20 interview tho.

SMW, I am in the same boat with SLU. Sent in my secondary early and have not heard from them yet. I took the August MCAT, so I don't know if that has anything to with it.

I worked with a medical student from there this summer and he had many positive things to say about the school, so I would really like hear from them.

i had everything in at SLU pretty early as well. i just got my app complete notification yesterday. things might be picking up a bit

I think SLU is kind of disorganized. About a week after my interview there, I received a letter confirming my interview date and giving me directions to the med school. The letter was postmarked the day after my interview occurred!

Also, one of my friends got a letter from them a couple of weeks ago saying that they had not received a secondary application from her and they were inviting her to please consider filling one out. She had mailed her secondary to them in September! She even checked her bank records and they had cashed her check long ago. About, a week later she got an e-mail saying that they did, in fact, have her secondary, they had just misplaced it.

The interview day seemed pretty unorganized as well.

Keep in mind, these things don't mean that SLU is a bad school, but they do probably need a new secretary...

same thing with me and SLU, i applied way early, and got an application complete from them really early. but still no word as to interview... or anything.

SMW,

I just called up Jefferson today. They said they received my "biology, physics and humanities letters" but they don't have my "chemistry" letter on the computer. Remember their stupid stringent letter requirement? Well, I had professors from biochem, physics, math and math write me letters. The lady said my file is not complete because of this... but it could be corrected by writing a letter to the director of admissions... anyway, I asked her to see if they had my other math letter on file and when she went to pull out my file, she said that it wasn't there, that it could be under review! WTF?!? Anyway, she told me to call back tomorrow and she'll check again... geeze.

SMW,

Any luck with Jefferson? The receptionist told me she'd email me with a committee decision today, but I received nothing. Perhaps they noticed that I did not adhere to the letter requirements described by moo. I will be pissed if I have to send in more letters. I gave them 6!!!

Hey Guys,

Re: Jeff letter requirements, their brochure says one from each instructor "if possible." Sounds like they've got to be a little flexible, no?

Yes, but supposedly you have to write a letter to the admissions director explaining that you want something else to replace the other letter.

Nahhh, Jefferson doesn't care. Didn't write any explanatory letters. Got an interview without having the royal flush of lor.

Thanks everyone, :)
I am going to be so pissed if Jefferson has held up my application without telling me anything for a "chemistry" letter! I sent them 4 letters (bio, physics, hum, and a doc), and one would think they'd infer from that that a chemistry letter was not possible!! Guess I'd better get on the phone with them and SLU.

Anyone know anything more about Mount Sinai? I have an interview at Rochester coming up, and I'd really like to coordinate interviews if they're considering giving me one. I did call them, and they said they'd make a note to my file, but still no word.

My application at Jefferson was complete back at the beginning of time (well, not quite, but like early october), and I just got a letter this past Tuesday with a stipulated interview date of Feb 6th. I've had 11 interviews up until today, obviously none of which were Jefferson.

Sinai seemed a bit more on the ball, since I heard from them within a few weeks of my app being complete.

Hope this helps. . . :)

a word of caution about jefferson!!!!!
i submitted my secondary in early august, and never heard a word from them. finally i called at the end of sept. and they told me my app had been complete for weeks! then, dean callahan emailed me saying that she'd love to invite me to interview, but had no record of me submitting a secondary!! as it turned out, the computer showed an app. complete, but they misplaced and could not find the actual paper copy of my secondary!!! so, the secretary had to go hunting around for my file and finally found my app. i was pissed since they had cashed my check and all...but they were really nice about the whole ordeal. it may be wise to call them and ask!!!

Did anyone get an application complete notice from Mt. Sinai?

<img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I just talked to Mount Sinai today, trying to get them to give me the option of coordinating interviews "if they were thinking of offering me one," and, while they did confirm that my app was complete, they were kind of snooty about it. Like, "didn't you ask us that last time we spoke?" (I called twice because the interview I'm trying to coordinate around got re-scheduled.) So, they will tell you if you call them. I wanted to ask why I never got an app complete notice, but didn't dare!

I'm surprised (well, not really) that they were snooty - I remember the secondary e-mail I got from them back in August was really polite and encouraging. I was really impressed with it at the time, but I guess times change.

SMW, did they help you out and grant you an interview? Congrats if they did...

Nope, just made another "note to my file." Hope the note doesn't say I'm bugging them way too much! :(

SMW ... If you don't mind posting your stats... I'm thinking about applying to Mount Sinai and Rochester myself...

Sure, no problem. MCAT 30M (V12 P8 BS10). GPA 3.5 cum, 3.4 science. Stanford undergrad. Lots of EC's, especially music, no research, volunteer work and internship working with underserved populations, and clinical internship with an internist (always wonder if I should call it an externship to avoid confusion!).

You should go for it!! Remember that their published average stats are for all their admitted applicants, and since many students on the high end of the stats end up going elsewhere, the actual averages for matriculants are lower. Good luck!!! :D

worry not about SLU.. My app there was complete in early August and I didn't get my interview invitation until late February of last year! I interviewed in April, got waitlisted 2 weeks later, and was accepted off the waitlist in July. So don't worry if you don't hear from them right away; sometimes they put applications on hold for a long time. If you get a thin envelope from them in the mail, don't assume it's a rejection and toss it in the trash; my invitation was on one page of paper and told me to call or e-mail them to schedule an interview. good luck!

Finally heard from the last 2 schools on my list I was worrying about (as to whether my app was complete) today. Jefferson phoned in response to my request to coordinate interviews (still nothing in writing, and they were vague about the letter question  ). And SLU finally got around to sending their postcard (about time! I sent them my secondary on 8/1!!! Guess the August MCAT is responsible, but really, they've had them for over a month, at least  ). Now I'm just waiting to hear something from Wake Forest who didn't invite me to complete their secondary until Nov. 19 (submitted it 12/4).

SMW-

I was wondering what Jefferson and Sinai said to you when you called about coordinating interviews. I called Jefferson recently and explained to them that I would be in the area at the end of January to look at schools to which I had already been accepted. The secretary told me I should have called when I was interviewing in Philly, but that she would send an attention note to the admissions committee. I called last Monday, but have yet to hear anything substantial. And, Mount Sinai laughed at me twice, so don't worry! I called Sinai, Cornell, and NYU when I was there for my Einstein interview and they said they couldn't pull my file at the moment and when I called when I was in NYC for NY Med, they laughed again! I called a third time to let them know I'd be in NYC for the holidays and they said they weren't interviewing b/w 12/21-1/4.

Good luck, my stats are similar to yours, except the MCAT breakdown is a little different, but I'll let you know if I hear anything from them!

Well the Jefferson phone call was a little weird. Anyway the gist is that I'm supposed to call back and talk to a particular person in admissions on Thurs. or Friday. I had called twice leaving messages that I wanted to coordinate interviews ("if they were thinking of blah blah blah"). They finally called back this morning and spoke to my Dad at 5:00am (none of these adcoms seem to be able to figure out that Alaska is 4 hours earlier than the east coast!) and left a cryptic message about being "able to accommodate my request." But then when I called them back at a decent hour, they wouldn't say they were granting me an interview, only that I should call back at the end of the week and speak to this particular person.

Mount Sinai just makes "notes to my file." I really don't know how many times I can afford to fly to New York.

Try calling Pittsburgh. They really laughed, and a scornful one at that! :(

Good luck to you too!! :) I see you really want to be in NYC. My apps are spread out all over the country.

Hehe, I'm from Pittsburgh and work at the darn UPMC system and they rejected me after cashing my check! Their rejection letter is mean too!

I'd like to be in Philly or NYC. My boyfriend is from the later and in school at Philly, so I'm looking around those two cities :) I'll let you know what happens with Jefferson when I call them later this week. I'd call before Friday, I know the students are done with finals the 20th or 21st. And, just to let you know, Jefferson only interviews on Wednesdays!

Hey SMW, just to let you know, if you can fly to Vancouver, you can then fly to NY on Cathay Pacific for 299, Canadian (=less than 200USD). Check out travelocity.ca for more details

That sucks (my MCPH interview is on a Saturday), as does the way Pitt rejected you! Thanks for the information, though. :)

Thanks, moo, you are so sweet to tell me that! :) I can't even imagine what it would cost me to fly to Vancouver (I will check, though). I sometimes pay more to fly to Portland, Oregon or Seattle than I've been paying for my east coast trips, which have not been cheap. For some reason the airlines see Alaskans as a captive audience, willing to pay anything to get out of the freezer!! ;)

SMW,

I called MCPHU to tell them I wanted to wait to hear from Jefferson before setting an interview date. MCPHU interviews 5 days a week, and it is easier to schedule around the Jefferson interview than vice versa. I was told that I should just schedule a date (Jan. 29th) and let them know if it needs to be changed to accomodate an interview offer by Jefferson. Maybe you can call and have them move your date to one closer to your Jefferson interview.

I called Jefferson AGAIN and left a message. Hopefully I'll hear something tomorrow (technically today). I was told I would be notified last week, but that didn't happen.

Hopefully, Jefferson will let me schedule an interview. I don't think I can attend the MCPHU interview if that is the only school I will be visiting during my trip to PA. Not having money SUCKS!!! I'm sure you understand this, having had to fly from AK numerous times.

SwampMan,
Thanks for that great information! I'd really prefer not be away on the weekends (my rock band needs me! ;) ), although usually a Sat. night stay is required for any kind of decent fare. :( Good luck with your interview scheduling. :)

SMW-how did you get an interview at MCPHU on a Saturday?!! I got interviewed there on a Monday (similar to everybody else I'm going for that Saturday airfare) :p

I don't know, it was just one of the dates they offered. Looks like I may be looking to change it after I talk to the mystery man at Jefferson.

SMW-

When is your interview for MCP? I called Jefferson to check if my message had been passed along to the admissions committee. The secretary said that while the committee had re-reviewed (I don't know if that's a word) my file, they would wait until the holidays to make a decision. She also told me that since purchasing tickets weren't essential (I'd be driving from the other side of the state,) that I'd hear a few weeks before my trip to the area.

I had read that you said you got a call, so I am wondering if it has anything to do with your cross the nation situation :) Happy holidays!

I've heard NOTHING in response to my inqueries!!! I wish Jefferson would notify me! The longer they wait, the more compelled I feel to contact them. I've already contacted them 3 times!!! If I call again, they are going to have a restraining order issued!

Swampman-

I forgot about you sorry! Yeah, that was my second call to them only b/c they told me too I'd hear in a week. So, I wait a week and two days :)

When's your interview for MCP scheduled? I assume you're flying from FL.

My interview is scheduled for the 29th of January. I told Jefferson I would not schedule the MCP interview until I heard from them 1st. It was a nice gesture to show that they are important to me. I said that I needed to have a response from them before my two week limit at MCP came up (gave them the date, etc...). The two week limit came, and no response. So, I called Jefferson early that day, and the receptionist told me she would email a decision to me that very day. NO EMAIL ARRIVED!!! The near end of the business day arrives, so I am forced to call MCP and schedule an interview. Fortunately, they said I can move the date if Jefferson can't work around it. I call Jefferson to let them know I had to schedule my MCP interview, and I get their voice-mail (after hours, so it was expected). I asked that they leave a message on my answering machine (I work during the day) or email me a decision. I was hoping they would do that today, but NOTHING!!! The longer they wait, the harder it will be to reschedule my MCP interview! I also need to order plane tickets, arrange to stay somewhere, etc...! BTW...Yes, I will be flying out of FL.

UGH!!!

I'm allowed to vent about an interview I haven't even been offered yet, am I not?!? ;) :p :D

Ha ha, that's funny. Jefferson only interviews on Wednesdays. So, I'm going to look at Temple and MCP again around that time. I told Jefferson that I would be in the area b/w 1/28-1/30. He he, conveniently, one of those days is a Wednesday. Hey, maybe we can convince those fools to interview us on the same day, that would be funny if we met! Anyway, good luck with them, luckily I'd be driving so I think that is why they are waiting, plus my stats are right on their averages. Since they just got ranked last year, who knows what will happen if they try to increase that ranking!

Funny how at first the problem is getting interviews, and then, after getting them, the interviews become the problem!!

Dr. Kermit - my interview is currently scheduled for Feb. 9.

Hang in there peeps - I just heard from Mt. Sinai. I'll be there on Jan 30th....wow my app was complete back in July! Oh well, they were waiting for my verified app which didn't come through until late October I think.

E'01 - how did you hear?

THis gives me hope... Mt Sinai is near the top of my list. They've got a great geriatrics dept there and that's why I wanna go...

I'm sure you'll hear from them soon moo. I was about to give up too (I work at Mt. Sinai and thought I'd hear sooner). SMW they sent me an email.
