How competitive is gen surg residency in general, and then vascular or spine fellowship for a DO?

Hi there,
Vascular is a fellowship after general surgery and Spine surgery is a fellowship after neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery.

If you are a DO, then how competitive general, neuro or orthopedic surgery is will depend on how well you did in medical school. If you did well, performed well on your board exams, then you should have a good shot at these residency programs.

njbmd 🙂

So general a surgery residiency is relativly easy to get into with average board scores (210-230)?

not quite. based on the numbers last year there were fewer than 10 open spots following the match. about 1500 applicants for 1000 spots, with the ratio of interviews to match about 10:1. derm, rad onc, radiology, surg subspecialties (plastics, ent, ortho) are the only residencies more competitive.

not a DO myself, but from what i've read and heard, it's even more difficult. strong scores help, but there appears to be a lot more to it. doing well in surgical clerkships helps a lot, along with research, letters, etc. good luck.

A 210 as a DO will make it challenging to get into an academic surgery program (everything else should be good). A 230 with good grades and recs should make you competitive for middle tier programs in general surgery. Though both scores are technically "average" a 230 makes a big difference over 210.

Im a DO applicant this year and I can tell you that avg. board scores will not do it. I dont know how many times ive heard this" You are the first DO appilcant we have ever interviewed" I ask them why? They say " Because you smoked your boards!" As a DO you have to do 230+ on the usmle and or rotate there. I was fortunate to interview(still interviewing) at great academic places and will get my 1st choice probably. The Avg. scores wont cut it. It is defenitly more than just the scores, but you have to have them to get to the interview, after that, the scores do not matter.

Thats the way it is right now..

Good luck
