eating a lot?

DO you guys find yourself eating more often while you're studying..or atleast more than you did prior to med school or when you go home during breaks? I feel like I'm hungry a lot more often when im on these studying bursts. Like Ill have a breakfast but 3 hrs later ill be hungry...its kinda wierd..and have put on some wt..officially started running yesterday...and it gets mad expensive cuz if you're studying out and abt you have to grab a bite from outside unless u pack a lunch but im alwyas running so late that taking the time out to make that lunch always seems so inefficient AT THE TIME, but in hindsight waiting at the drive thru lines makes it even more frustrating..lol...alrite im done complaining..
 
I'm ALWAYS hungry when I start studying. I end up taking breaks almost every hour to eat. It's annoying because I'll just be getting in the "groove" and then I get a big mac attack.🙄
 
Absolutely. I find myself snacking more and more as exam time gets closer. I've also realized that I never eat candy, unless I'm studying...I guess I feel like I "need" the sugar!

Ok I am excited cos i actually have something good (i hope) to contribute. This academic year, I started working out, for the first time in my life and i have begun to understand the value of "a calorie". You know, it's like how our parents say you'll never understand the value of money till you start to work. Well, you start making wiser decisions when you spend an hour in the gym and the amount of calories you burned is equal to what you get from a "big mac" sandwich, which by the way, only takes like 2 minutes to eat. So my point is this, it is okay to get hungry when you're studying, it happens to many people, myself included. Just deal with it by stocking up on healthy snacks. During exam periods, my study times goes up alot, and so, i usually stock my fridge up with tons of veggies and fruits. They make great snacks and totally grow on you, so much that now i try to have them available, even during non-exam times. Carrots also make for excellent "brain-food". That is my recipe for surviving exam times, without starving yourself and without gaining excess weight!! Hope that helps somewhat.
 
Hmm. I'm trying to think of a non-dorky way of saying this, but I can't seem to think of any right now. Your brain consumes a lot of glucose when you study. you should feed your hunger with frequent snacks, otherwise, you won't retain as much. I know that this is bad medical advise, but I actually loved eating candy whenever I would study. Sourpatch watermelons or kids were always my favorite study snack, I used to call it brain food. I tried the fruit thing for a while, but those complex carbohydrates can be pretty tiring to break down. I always felt like taking a nap if I just had a fruit during my study session. I think that my body prefers the simple sugars. That being said, you should try to eat some fruit in addition to the simple sugars since you could probably also use the vitamin E in it's natural form too. Foods like blueberries that are rich in vitamin E were once shown to improve memory in rats. The processed pill form of vit E doesn't work.

Candy could be fine for short term glucose needs. I think they only lead to excess weight gain, if you overdo it (since that's the op's major concern). The same with pretty much anything. On a side note, those sour patch things are pretty torturous (insert appropiate smiley).
 
your brain prefers glucose and most candies and a ton of foods contain high fructose corn syrup as their sugar substitute so candy definitely isn't adequate brain food. you just get a sugar rush and gain weight.
 
Just eat healthy, and you'll be ok. Have something with a low glycemic index like an orange or whole wheat bread, and you won't get hungry as often. Things to stay away from are stuff like white bread, carrots, anything with a high glucose content or fructose content (I know, fructose has a GI of 0 but it makes you hungry again right way). Most processed foods are loaded with corn syrup, watch out for that. Also stay away from large fatty meals, they will satisfy your hunger but all those calories aren't good. Eat smaller portions more often, and this will help the hunger as well. I usually keep 3 pieces of fruit on me for those study snacks. Acidic fruits like grapefruit, or lactate rich foods like yogurt will also help decrease hunger.

Running @ 75% max heart rate for 25min three times a week will also help increase your metabolic rate (which consumes 75% of your calories in a day. The additional calories burnt by exercise is fairly insignificant unless you run 4 hr a day or something)
