Hi:

I am curious can you scramble or be offered positions (outside of the match) without an ECFMG certificate? I won't be able to take the CSA prior to Jan 31 so I won't be able to go through the match. Some schools have expressed interest in a position outside the match but would they allow it if I haven't gotten or qualified for the ECFMG certificate? Also, how long does certification usually take? Thanks

You are not required to have your certificate to be offered a position but must have it to start work. However, that said, most programs would be rather reticent, IMHO, to offer a spot without at least all the exams completed, if not certificate in hand.

Certificate can take 2 months or more depending on the efficiency of your school, whether English translation is required, and the time of year, etc. If you take the CSA at the end of January, you should have no trouble getting your certificate before July 1, although you may find some programs hesitant to offer you a spot until the scores from the CSA are in.

Best of luck.

Hi:

Thanks Kimberli! Is there anyone out there who has experience with signing for a position outside the match or scrambling w/o an ECFMG certificate?
