Is a class like diversity of life (ecology) needed for the general bio section of the mcat?

Possibly. I got a passage on evolution that totally surprised me. It wasn't something that I had prepared for.

i had a phylogeny passage on the august mcat
 
I really doubt it. My ecology class was very mathematical and oriented very specifically to the topic.
 
I don't recall having any questions on the MCAT that my ecology class helped with. Far more important is biochem and A&P. They say you don't need biochem for the MCAT, but it is helpful in a big way.

As far as ecology goes, though, my personal experience is that it is rather irrelevant.
