Hello. I'm new to SDN forum, and I am quite concerned about my ECs.

Freshman year: Research, 1 paper published (worked there since junior year in high school), American Medical Student Association Pre-Med, Deaf Club

Summer after freshman year: Tutored deaf elementary students in Africa for 6 weeks, approximately a month shadowing an orthopaedic surgeon

Sophomore year: a secretary at Deaf Club, AMSA Pre-Med, volunteered at Thoracic Cardiovascular Post Operative Unit at the hospital 3 hours each week (assisted staff with administrative tasks in a chaotic environment and had moderate patient contact)

Summer after sophomore year: Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (6-week preparatory program with medicine-related learning seminars and some clinical exposure through small-group clinical rotations)

Junior year: Vice-president at DEAF club, AMSA Pre-Med, volunteering at Surgical Intensive Care Unit (interacting with patients and assisting staff with errands, high patient contact)

Are my ECs good enough for US medical schools? Do I need more clinical experience? Do I need to join more student organizations? Do I need to do more shadowing? Also, what do pre-meds do in the summer after their junior years? I'd really appreciate your comments!

No you don't have enough. Post this on a DO thread.

Sorry, but you should seriously start thinking Caribbean.

How was the SMDEP for ya? Did you like it and was it hard to get in.

SMDP was a lot of fun and beneficial. I don't think it is hard to get in, but it takes some work to apply to that program.

Can I PM you about SMDP?

yes, you can PM me about SMDP.

bigDee, I'll PM you.

I'm trying to decide what to do this summer. That's why I asked if I need to do more shadowing or something.

you can say everything here

true, but I just want my questions answered and not change the topic to SMDP.

Yes

Do I need more clinical experience?

I think you have enough, but it never hurts to have more.

Do I need to join more student organizations?

Student orgs. are useless unless you have a leadership role. So I don't think you need to join any more.

Do I need to do more shadowing?

Again, I think you are fine here, but more always helps.

Also, what do pre-meds do in the summer after their junior years? I'd really appreciate your comments

Whatever interests you. Your AMCAS will be turned in by then, so do what you want. They wont know what you are up to unless you update them.

I think you are doing fine EC wise.

hey! How did u get a chance to shadow the orthopaedic surgeon? Did u know him through a contact or did you contact a few physicians yourself?

I would like to shadow a specialist, but I don't know how to go about it. Should I just pull out a directory and contact as many people as I can? Any advice?

Through contacts. My research mentor knew someone who knew an orthopaedic surgeon. It was weird, but it was worth it.
