Hi everyone -

I just learned a speeding ticket I got a while back was actually a misdemeanor rather than a simple traffic infraction. I didn't report any misdemeanors on ERAS, so I called/emailed all program coordinators where I have interviewed to inform them that I do have the misdemeanor, and I apologized for the miscommunication.

Is there anything else to do other than this? And how will they view this? So far, 2 have said it doesn't matter, the others have said nothing.

I reported them on my AMCAS and secondaries. However, when I got the results of my background check it never even showed up. I don't think any program is going to freak out about a traffic violation...

*** I see this is for residency, but the same thing probably applies, unless you have a long history of traffic violations 😉

Why is a speeding ticket a misdemeanor?

Depends on the state and how many mph over the speed limit you go. Go high enough over the speed limit and you get charged with reckless endangerment, which is a felony with prison time attached in some states (including the state in your username).

For example, someone going 70+ mph in a neighborhood where the speed limit is 30 mph should probably be punished a little more severely than someone going 10 mph over anywhere. Not all speeding tickets are equal and context matters.

Do you live in SC? they treat it like a normal speeding ticket - it's so stupid how SC considers it a misdemeanor, they need to change that.

as long as you weren't going 100 over or it was actually a reckless driving ticket you will be fine

Have you tried contacting a lawyer in that state? It could be possible to have this dismissed from your record. Otherwise, we are all doing guess work here. Do the majority of us consider it not a big deal would expect residency to see it the same? Yes, but are there people that will flip out or just not bother because other applicants exist? Also yes.

Good luck.

Have you seen any applicants passed over because of having a speeding ticket that happened to be a misdemeanor?

No, but I've also never seen an applicant with a speeding ticket misdemeanor.
