How would you write the electron configuration of Fe?

electron configuration of Fe: 1s2, 2s2, 2p6,3s2,3p6, 3d6, 4s2 ?

Is it this right? I always get confused in the order for n = 3 shell group. Thanks!

Yes, that looks correct. The order goes from "s" to "p" to "d" to "f", each shell holding more electrons. But the tricky part is to remember that when Fe becomes a positive ion, you remove the electrons from its outermost shell first - namely, the 4s2 becomes a 4s and so on. Many people just take away the "3d6" electron (making it "3d5...) and forget that it is not the outer shell.
