I am finishing my EM residency in June and considering working in New Zealand.

I am unclear if I would be able to work as a Specialist there given that I will be only board eligable not board certified.

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks.

One of my new graduates was looking at this last summer. My understanding was that she was told she could get a senior house officer position, but not unrestricted practice until she passed ABEM.

can't answer your question. but...

I spent several months in New Zealand during a year I took between 3rd and 4th year in med school. I was rotating through the "Accident & Emergency Ward" in Dunedin. It was a great time. This academic ED was run like ours, by trained attendings. But the residents were not EM. They were all doing a 3 year pre-residency extended internship type thing.

Where do you want to go? I want to either return to NZ or go to Oz for some locum work after residency, before the kid is old enough to start school.

I spoke to a recruiter this year at ACEP about New zealand. She recommended gettinga few years practice under your belt before going there as the pay is based you your 'ranking' which is based on experience.

I can't remember the name of the recruiter but I am sure if you google EM and new zealand you will find someting.

I spent 2 weeks there on vacation during my 4th year of med school right before residency started.

I'm not sure what to do: I'd really like work there for a couple of years now and then move back and start a family and all that stuff.

But it bothers me to think that i'd have to take a position less than a specialist/attending after completing residency.

Been in touch with a NZ based recruiter but haven't heard from her in several days presumably because of the holidays.

Just trying to gather all the information so I can make a decision. Any further input anyone has is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

I spent a month in Sydney in 4th year med school. The Aussies and Kiwis have very similar medical systems. They use specialists in EM, and they have dedicated residencies for EM. The problem arises in the training there. To do any specialty you have to do 3 years of general medicine to become a "GP" before doing additional 2-3 years of specialty medicine.

They are cool places to live, however if you move there expect to take a 2/3 pay cut plus an increased cost of living.

In addition to the Global Medical Staffing that sends people, there was another hospital at ACEP that was directly recruiting...thus you'd get paid a whole lot more than through GMS. Try looking under the names of the exhibitors at ACEP.
