I just had a couple quick questions about the application process. I have heard that certain emails do not work well with the spam in different school systems. I have heard that GMAIL works the best to put on applications. Does this matter? Also, Is it ok to type the personal statement on word and copy and paste it over to the AMCAS application? Just wanted to check on this. Thanks

I use hotmail and the only thing you have to do is check your junk mail folder everyday (simple to do since its right on the screen) junk mail is not deleted for a week and thats where those emails go if they dont go to your inbox.

I typed my PS in the box on the AMCAS. I have heard that if you copied and pasted from Word certain symbols like quotation marks turn into question marks or something.

i used yahoo and had no problems with the spam filter catching any med school emails.

as far as word, it tends to cause some weird formatting. i would recommend using notepad or textedit (depending on if you're pc or mac) because the plain text format of those programs can be cut and pasted just fine.

DO NOT use word since some of the text will be screwed up when transferred to AMCAS

I cut and pasted from Word into the PS box with no problems. Gmail is good.

I agree with NS. If you use gmail, add a label for med school stuff and filter it that way. Nothing got erroneously put in my spam "folder" from gmail that way.
Word worked fine. After you paste it into the AMCAS box be sure to proofread for funny characters. It's not rocket science.

Check your spam filter EVERYDAY during the application process. I would have missed out on a UT Houston interview had I not, especially since they failed to send me anything by snail mail.

As for your personal statement, either 1) type it in directly into the AMCAS application or 2) cut-n-paste from a bare bones-type word processor like Text or Notepad as jbrice suggested.

Type your essay in word. Then, copy it into Notepad and proofread. The AMCAS box 'interprets' your characters in exactly the same way that Notepad does, so this will be an accurate preview (in a more-appropriate-sized window). Be especially vigilant about checking distorted quotation marks, apostrophes, dashes, and any other non-alphanumeric symbol. Then paste into the AMCAS box. It's really pretty painless.

And so you know, the AMCAS print preview messes up the look of your essay, paragraph wise. It's nothing to worry about.
