email vs handwritten letters to top choices

Similar to the lengthy discussions on thank you notes, any thoughts on whether to email or hand-write letters of intent to your top choices? I'm also doing an IM/surgery couples match, so is sending out 3-5 letters appropriate?
Any input would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

just realized that a handwritten letter to the PD is probably inappropriate for these, so make that email vs a typed letter...
