Emailing schools?

how is this method as a way to check your application status?

Among the schools I've sent my inquiring emails to, not even a half has replied back with anything so far. (and it has been more than a week)

Give 'em a call, unless they specifically ask not to. It's much easier to ignore an e-mail than an actual person on the other line.
