its just me being old fashioned but i think a formal letter is more respectful plus i dont really think either one will affect the admission decision.
As an MSTP applicant, we often have 5-8 different interviews per school, over a period or one or two days. Take that plus the program directors who we also thank sometimes, and that's a helluva lotta formal letters to stamp, package, and send. Email all the way, baby!
No. It's a matter of personal convenience and professional etiquette. Etiquette of course doesn't get you in. It only serves as a slight advantage, which sometimes makes a big difference.
