i am currently doing my first 3rd year clinical rotation in ob/gyn. however, I am interested in doing a 4th year elective in emergency medicine. i have 2 questions:

1. what books would u recommend reading for an emergency medicine elective?

2. also, are electives graded on a pass/fail basis? is there any oral or written exams at the end like as in the core rotations?

thanks in advance for any input that can be provided.

A realistic goal might be to read as much of baby Tintinalli (the "companion handbook" by Cline and Ma) or Emergency Medicine Secrets as possible. Or perhaps both if you have the time.

Emergency medicine electives vary from place to place. Most require you to simply keep a record of people/cases you see, and perhaps certain procedures (e.g. ABGs). Some places, like Wayne State's program in Detroit actually have a clerkship exam (I believe it is a required rotation for all their medical students). Contact wherever you are interested in rotating, and find out the scoop.
