This question is directed at neurosurgical residents and attendings.

Is "emergency" and/or "trauma" neurosurgery a viable career path for neurosurgery graduates? Could a neurosurgeon focus his or her practice on emergent/trauma cases for a living?

I was also wondering if you think there is or would be a distinction between an emergency neurosurgeon and a neurotrauma surgeon. I have read that general surgeons can subspecialize in trauma surgery (treating MVA patients, GSW patients, etc.), which at many institutions is different from emergency surgery (emergent appys and choles, etc.).

Finally, if a graduating resident sought additional training in this "subspecialty" of neurosurgery, what fellowship might be most appropriate? Looking to general surgery again, aspiring trauma surgeons often pursue fellowships in surgical critical care. Would an aspiring emergency/trauma neurosurgeon pursue a neurocritical care fellowship?

Thanks.
