I'm having a really tough time deciding whether to rank Emory or Northwestern as my top choice. I left each of these programs with a really good impression of the residents and the program directors. I was hoping somebody would have some more insight into each of these programs (positives & negatives), and how competitive they are in terms of fellowsip placement.
Good Luck to all of you

I interviewed at both programs, and I also had a good overall impression of both. As far as fellowship placement, though, I feel you'd probably be better off with Northwestern (better rep for IM?). But that's just my feeling, from what I remember from the fellowships the former residents got.

I think Emory is a much better program. I interviewed at both, and the breadth of experience you will get at Emory will not be matched at Northwestern. The four hospitals, compared to just the hotel northwestern, are incomparable, in my opinion. Emory also has much better fellowship placement. Northwestern is certainly much improved in the last few years, but the reputation it carries on both coasts is still as the cush program.

how competitive is emory in terms of IM?

i'm not trying to endorse either program, but just bear in mind you will do 3-4 months of gen med at the chicago va (formerly west side) hospital and can opt to do ambulatory at the lakeside va if you want a "broader" experience at northwestern. very few programs, as asm3 pointed out, allow a resident to rotate at private, public, county and va hospitals. however, the biggest con to this is that you have to learn the ropes and quirks of each environment. i think that is a personal issue and, for me, rotating at more than 2-3 is a bit onerous.

sanfillippo,

from your past posts it seems that you were deliberating mainly between UChicago, Northwestern, and Wisconsin...I was curious what are your thoughts now as we get closer to match day. PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting....I am also considering these programs.

Thanks!
