Hi. First time poster here. =)

I was just wondering. Which of these courses (two 0.5 yr courses or one 1 yr course) do you think is best for fulfulling the 1 yr english requirement for most med schools? Thanks!

1.) ENGLISH - Grammar & Proofreading (0.5 yr) - A strict, prescriptivist approach to the fundamental rules and protocols of Standard Written English (SWE).

2.) ENGLISH - Prose: Style & Argument (Full year) - An introduction to the practice of non-fictional prose with particular emphasis on the development of argument (logic, evidence, proof) and on fitting language to its occasions (voice, diction, figures).

3.) ENGLISH - Rhetoric: An Historical Introduction (0.5 yr) - Introduces theories of rhetoric and composition from an historical perspective.

4.) PROFESSIONAL WRITING - Theories of Writing (0.5 yr) - Students in this course explore, and learn to apply, some of the recent research on the act of writing from a variety of disciplines including cognitive psychology, linguistics, communications studies and education.

5.) WRITING - Academic Writing: Developing Sentence Sense (0.5 yr) - This course examines current theory on the role of grammar and style in the writing process and provides students with strategies for constructing clear, readable sentences in the context of academic writing.

6.) WRITING - Effective Writing and Research (0.5 yr) - Develops research and writing skills appropriate to university-level work in both liberal arts and professional studies through the study of a particular issue from a variety of perspectives. Areas covered include formulating research questions, using research tools such as libraries and the Internet, primary and secondary sources and proper citation.

Thanks again guys! Really appreciate it!

Eh.. English comp + English litt(or a humanities course big on litt) is the common choice for many people.
Of these classes I think that professional writing is the closest to English composition.

The bottom line here is that most medical schools are not going to care which specific writing/english course you take to fulfill the requirement. You should take the course that you believe will be most interesting/help you most.

The courses you'll get A's in are the are the best for fulfilling the requirement. Interest, as has been stated, is also a factor.

Can you AP out of one of the semesters of the 2 semester Eng. requirement? I placed out of one semester here at my university, was wondering if that transfers over as well.
