I e-mailed my personal statement to an English teacher for help, and she said the following: "You spelled "interested" incorrectly in that last e-mail you sent me. This means you lack attention to detail and would not make a good physician." I was like WTF? My email does not have spell check, and adding an extra r in interested does not mean I would make a horrible physician. I just think that people hold physicians to a ridiculous standard.

What kind of crappy email do you use that doesn't have spell check??? Even Firefox has spell check if you are using web based.

she clearly has not seen enough doctors in her life

ps: when I took my MCAT, I didn't even know women don't have prostate.
I only learned about that until I was 2 months into a prostate cancer project with some of the biggest names in the field asking, "how come all our patients are male?"
    everyone had a good laugh.

Bro, along with the inner ear the prostate is the number one thing that helps with equilibrium and spatial orientation. Ever wonder why men>women at driving?

Don't let it make you defensive. Maybe you could leverage the criticism? Ask her what tips she has for being more conscientious. Use her keen eye to tighten up your PS. And don't use her as a LOR. ;)

Why does it matter if you know how to spell or not? Your handwriting's going to be all scribbly anyways--not like anyone's going to be able to read it.

what's funny is that one of my PIs thought I lied to about my mcat score after that incidence and I had to show him an official copy haha.

Heh, I don't think a prostate would even fit down there. Cross-sectional diagrams already show that it's mess as it is, already trying to fit three different organs in one crammed area, with the capacity of the bladder being effected.

    It's okay...

Actually, I wouldn't have. It would have been funny though.

Your teacher sounds like a pain, and I think she's exaggerating, but you probably should pay a bit more attention to how you portray yourself to others through email and the like. Sometimes, an email is your first impression on someone, and a mis-spelled word is a silly reason to leave a bad first impression.

FWIW, its reassuring to know that if she scrutinized your email to such an extent, she will probably do the same with your PS.

 But I don't see how your MCAT score correlates with you knowing whether women have prostates or not. Not that it would be tested directly anyway, but if it was, you could miss the question and still get a 15 on BS.

Just to play devil's advocate though, she does have a valid point. If you didn't notice the extra "R", how do we know you wouldn't fail to notice a minor, yet crucial 1) change in patient vital signs/stats, or 2) physical detail/blemish in a patient when you're examining them.

Yeah, you've been "trained" to see them, but you were also trained to "spot spelling mistakes." Don't get me wrong, I miss small stuff like that all the time--but the above was just to illustrate her point. How DO we know that you won't miss a fine detail in a patient? We're human, unfortunately, and that's why we have malpractice insurance.

This is a silly way of looking at things. A typo does not mean you are going to be a horrible physician like his teacher insinuated. It's like saying "You hate puppies. Puppies are cute. So are babies. Ergo, you hate babies and will be a horrible physician."

At first, I was like, eh? Then was like ohhhhhhh..... lolz

    That.

There is a difference between an accident and sheer incompetence. Besides, what qualifies an English teacher to say whether someone will be a good physician or not?

I dont know about this advice. This morning my summer program group had a discussion panel with an admission committee at TCOM and they pointed that out. They, and I quote, said " If you cant go over your ps that tells us that you dont pay attention to detail. You guys would be amazed at how many letters that were deal breakers". They even gave us an example: After you've been working 22 hrs straight and have to read over patient x chart, you might just skim over it and miss something that could kill him. Dramatic...yes but they are serious spelling nazis for sure. I would just spell check everything for now own.

Even so, spell check won't help when you replace one real word ('from') with another (but incorrectly used) real word ('for'). My only reason for pointing this out is to agree with what others have already said - we're only human, and saying someone shouldn't be a doctor because they made a small mistake in an email (or an SDN post) or even in a personal statement would leave us with few candidates. Making a spelling error is not the same as killing your patient. I think that it's a bit of a stretch to say that one is an accurate predictor of the other. I agree with those saying not to take the teacher's snarky statements to heart.

Hey, I totally 10,000% agree. But Im just saying what the admissions committee said. I think it is bull but many on the committee think the same way as the op teacher.

I'm sure most people would spend a lot more time checking over their ps than a quick email, so this doesn't seem very relevant to me. I agree that mistakes in a ps might be a deal breaker, but one misspelled word in an email definitely doesn't mean someone doesn't have what it takes to become a competent physician.

Seriously??...that is like saying if you have ever drove over the speed limit your ethics as a physician should be questioned.

Bottom line of this English teacher...haters gonna hate...next time i want input on if I would make a good English teacher ill ask the people at the drive-thru at McDonalds...RIGHT

OP, the quicker you develop a thick skin the easier your life will be.
