Hi all, I am in a weird situation at the moment. I am currently enrolled as a D1 at dental school. Our orientation and start of classes was 3 weeks ago, so I am deep into school now. However, I just found out I got off the waitlist for my state school. My state school was actually my #1 choice (way cheaper), but I wasn't sure I would get off the waitlist, so I enrolled in my current dental school.

How should I proceed in this situation? Is it possible to simply drop out of my current dental school, and enroll with my state school? Are there any repercussions to doing this? Thanks all.

I’ve heard of this happening before and the student did drop out of the school he was attending. Not sure if there’s any repercussions except you spent a good chunk of money already

Maybe talk to your state school and ask for guidance in dropping out of the current school

Think about the huge debt relieve when you choose your state school. Go for it !

Would it be worth it to ask the admissions director of the state school who offered me the acceptance? I have heard some schools will not accept off the wait list if a student is already enrolled in another school.

I really don't want to lose my spot to the state school since it would save me almost 200k compared to the private dental school I am in now.

Do everything that you can to secure your spot. Do not lose this unique opportunity.

Do it man! Especially if this school is far away from home. If the tuition is significantly cheaper than it's 100% worth it for that alone. You can usually get a full or partial refund for dropping out within the first few weeks but even if you don't, in the long run, you won't regret the decision or the money/time lost.

You pay semester by semester so the most you would miss out on is 1 semester of tuition. If they are generous they might give you back all the tuition. I would totally take this opportunity and say see ya to the expensive private school.

There is a chance the second school might rescind the acceptance once they find out the op is already enrolled at another institution.

You should be fine doing it. Just handle it with tact with your current school. Honestly saving money going to a state school is a better deal.
Talk to state school in how to handle it after you accept their offer. Otherwise, since you already committed to and are attending a different School, they might just give that spot to another student. So be very careful how you handle both schools.

this literally a "thousands of dollars" problem, basically handing you 100k. Act accordingly 🙂

Make sure the state school is willing to hold your seat until you meet with your current school. Can you imagine a world where you drop out then state school rescinds their offer?

I know for undergraduate they offered students to drop the semester with a partial refund.

You are ahead of the game. Already have taken some classes so you are in dental school mode and you are about to save 1-200k...maybe. Congrats. Talk to the state school and say you are on the way. Maybe get something in writing that your spot is ready for you.

Talk to the private school and say thank you.

Maybe they beg you to stay and honor the state tuition. Don't hold your breath. There is probably a long wait list of ummm. students happy to pay 500k.
