Hmmm...
An EM doc that does a fellowship in SM is easily prepared to work in either the ED, sports clinic, or athletic field. Many docs choose to split their time from clinic to ED. Personally, I believe no one is better qualified to be an "on the field" doc an an EM trained physician, so I think it is a perfect fit.
As for physical therapy, personally I think it is unethical for anyone other than a physical therapist to perform physical therapy etc.
For mor information on sportsmedicine and EM go to the www.saem.org website.

I agree with the PT statement above. Depending on state laws, though, certain professions can overlap with each other. I'm not going to go in to it, because I only know current laws in Ohio, but by law, Physical Therapy is performed by a Physical Therapist. Athletic Trainers practice Athletic Training. So on and so forth.

From what I've read and fellowship directors I've talked to, the fellowship is much like an athletic training education. You learn techniques that an ATC would learn to supplement your on-field management of injuries.

The SAEM website is great for all kinds of info. Also, check out The Physician and Sportsmedicine website (www.physsportsmed.com) and search for fellowships for more info. Their "pearls" are good, too.

DocWagner, I also wholeheartedly agree with you that EM docs are the most qualified for on-field handling of anything that pops up. That's what they do 🙂
