Hi, there! I'm a medical student from NY applying to IM residency programs this cycle. My husband lives in CA and I was wondering if this is something I should include in my personal statement for CA programs. All of my other educational experience has been in NY and I don't have any other connection to CA in my application. If so, what is the best way to phrase this in the personal statement? Or, is it better to have a general personal statement and contact programs later to tell them about my motivation to move to CA?
Have you asked this question to the open forum regarding residency? I know there are ways that the ERAS system accommodates candidates with family considerations such as spouses and families, so I am not sure including this information in your personal statement is necessary. There could be another essay prompt that requests this information. I would also ask your student dean (who is writing your evaluation letter) who should be working with you on your application.
