I just did a discrete and had no idea how to go about it.. any help would be much appreciated! :)

Considering the charge of Eriochrome Black T in alkaline solution, its molecular structure most likely contains:
A) three acidic functional groups
B) two acidic and one basic functional group
C) one acidic and two basic functional groups
D) three basic functional groups

Answer: A

That's just a structural question. There was nothing related to eriochrome black T in your reading? It has 2 OH groups that can function as an acid and an acidic oxygen on a sulfur. So 3 acidic functional groups.

It should give you the info that it has a -3 charge in basic conditions, implying that it has 3 acidic groups.

It was a free-standing question.. I don't need to know this info as background, right?
thanks!

You don't need to know the structure and it is a pretty poor question, but best guess would be A. A base in a basic solution is uncharged, while an acid will be charged because it will become deprotonated.

Consider the following question:

Considering the average matriculant MCAT score is 33, which one of the following student scores indicates a matriculant?

A: 34
B: 33
C: 32
D: 31

You don't know that the 34 got in, but based on only the information provided it is the best guess.
