I'm looking at MSAR and the estimated cost of room/board/food/transportation etc. is sometimes over 30K per year

do people need to borrow that much or do you think many people get away with cheaper living expenses?

see Mayo, Chapel Hill, UCLA.. NW is 27K

Cost of living varies with location and your version of "acceptable" lifestylr

You don't "need" to unless you can otherwise pay or lower your rent and other expenses. If you have some other income stream or you don't mind malnutrition and gunshots flying by your hovel you can take out much fewer loans.
