Hello All

I'm a current final year medical student in Romania and was hoping to find a residency position anywhere in Western Europe.

I shall graduate here at the end of Sept 2009 so I am exploring the options open to me.

I have read alot about Germany, Norway, Sweden, Spain on this forum, but I was wondering if some kind soul could please advise me on which countries will give opportunities to fellow EU graduates at this moment in time and which options would be the most realistic.

Once I have 'picked' a country to try, I am willing to stay there, enroll in an language course or any other shall we say exam preparation courses. Could anyone please let me know if these kinds of courses exist and where? as I'm willing to spend the year after I graduate in one of these if it will help me gain a residency place. I anm particulary interested in Family Medicine as a specialisation if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Superfraiere,

given your interest in family medicine, I am convinced that there are opportunities for you somewhere in Europe. Family medicine is usually referred to as General Medicine in most European countries. In a lot of countries, this specialty is not very competitive, e.g. in Germany and France. In fact, there is a growing shortage of general practitioners in Germany right now. I am also pretty sure that Scandinavian countries offer some opportunities as well, especially if you are flexible with regard to the location, i.e. willing to work in the north.
Are you an EU citizen ? To my knowledge, EU nationals are not required to take any official language tests to be eligible to work in another EU country, this however doesn't mean that employers will not check on your language skills or even employ you without any knowledge of the local language. Norway as a non EU country makes taking a language test mandatory.

Thanks alot for the info.

I am an EU national, and I'm aware "in theory" of the smooth path we should have but in practice, I guess it's different. No?

If it's no problem for you, could you please outline the steps I should make in gaining a family medicine residency place in the afore mentioned countries. Exuse me for my ignorance.

The thing is, that I want to have a plan in place ASAP so that for example, I can start learning the language in advance, preparing the neccessary paperwork etc.

Also, I havn't heard much about these countries: Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Malta, Portugal. Are these viable options?

Thanks again

this is a generalized answer to anybody that wants to pursue residency in EU. EU does not have a national match and generalized exams like in the US. If you want to do residency, you must contact each state's medical board and ask. Each board has different requirements for non-EU citizens.

Here for Germany:
http://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/page.asp?his=4.3569

Overall, to practice medicine in the EU if you
a) don't have EU citizenship

and

b)a degree from a non-EU medschool

it's usually some combination of internship plus some kind of exam PLUS language proficiency. Again, contact the medical board/council to exactly know what they want from you.
