I was...

He was peddling one of those new Incretin class Diabetes meds.

He was real young and pompous and kept saying things like, "I bet they didn't teach you about this stuff in med school!" and "I guarantee you don't know what GIP or GLP is, hahaha"

This continued for about 20 minutes... Eventually my attending said to him "He is going to be a doctor soon, you should be nicer to him".

I don't mind being pimped by attendings and even some residents, but a drug rep. acting like he's some kind of god... come on! Buy my lunch, talk about your product and then shut up buddy.

Man. That's harsh. THe only thing worse is being pimped by a fellow medical student or a fellow intern.

You can politely ask them to **** off.

I think being pimped by a drug rep is the only time I've ever been gruff with someone on my rotations so far. It started when I casually asked her if there was any way to minimize the metallic taste that patients experience with a certain insomnia medication. She then tried to tell me that said drug does NOT cause wicked Dysgeusia and then proceeded to teach me what a GABA receptor was and how the "calcium ions" flow thru it. She went on for about 5 minutes, talking down to me a bit..I nodded my head acknowledging that I was at least half listening to her...And then she used the exact line "I bet they skipped all that in your medical training dear."

I'm usually pretty thick skinned but it rubbed me the wrong way. I told her that I had 3 questions on GABA receptors on my boards, that I passed and she didn't..then corrected her on the fact that chloride ions flow thru GABA channels...and then since I was on a roll I mentioned to her that they even teach us to count to 30 in medical school and that her 30 seconds were officially up now. While walking away I casually told her to tell her company to put some money into fixing that wicked dysgeusia or to make the drug into a diet pill instead. I ducked into the next patient room with a smile on my face again. 🙂

She was a new rep I think... Slender, young, beautiful. I mean all ya gotta do is let us sign the sample release, give your blurb about your product and smile!

Seriously though, pretty much all of the other drug reps have been nothing but wonderful to me. I'm glad they exist! But please, don't pimp the future doctors...that's the attending's job...and I hear my attending actually spent some time at an actual 😱 MEDICAL SCHOOL! 😱

You should have asked him why someone as smart as he is didn't get into Med school and ended up being a drug rep instead😀

I had 7 different buddies who were Pre-med in undergrad and didn't have the grades or MCAT to get into med school who are now drug reps.

A lot of drug reps usually don't have any science background at all. They're usually in it for the sales/money. The company will usually teach what they need to know (so their knowledge is limited to what they are selling) - so for them, all the science stuff is over-their-head so if they understand what is being taught, they like to show-off a bit (it's human nature). And add to the fact that the company might be telling them "you're learning stuff that they don't even teach in med school" - the drug reps might just believe it.

Now if most of their physicians are private practice outpatient settings who are 20+ years out of medical school ... chances are the drug reps will feel superior in their knowledge of biochemistry/molecular biology/physiology of that particular drug. It just re-enforce their perception.

Of course the best response is to remember their name and tell them that you are calling their company and reporting them for being rude, obnoxious, and that "i'm not sure if I got the name right but I do know he/she was selling THIS DRUG. From now on, this (name of drug) rep will no longer be allowed to visit"

The company will know exactly who visited where and for what ... and will leap tall buildings to apologize and make amends (usually with new drug reps and more goodies)

*saw this while doing an outpatient rotation ... the obnoxious drug rep basically was rude to the front office staff and the patients in the waiting room ... which drew the physician's ire ...

Hey Richie, your website / blog is a riot! I actually LOL'ed at some of the stuff you got on there.

Glad you approve  I should probably update it again soon. I've been slack on recording lately also.

Yeah this would definitely have gotten me some retribution...but for some reason I just couldn't that day. I'm way too soft hearted. It does, for some strange reason, make me want to go read "The House of God" again. Remember, "They can always hurt you more..."

Drug reps only know their own product, and they are regurgitating what they were taught by their company. Any thoughtful question by a physician usually is answered with "uh...uh..." at first and then "I'll have to find that out and let you know." They have no medical knowledge, as is evidenced by Richie's story about GABA receptors (although I didn't remember it was chloride...biochem was too long ago!). I just smile and nod every time a drug rep gives me the spiel about their product. I have the same set of meds I use for everyone for blood pressure, cholesterol, etc...just because you do your spiel and give me a pen doesn't mean I am going to use your product.
They get less high and mighty when you have the long white coat...then it's "Hi, Doctor! How are you today?" And then the brown nosing begins.

Hey, Dr. Kimble. How you been?

I saw this thread and had to jump in. Long story short = My frist job out of college was a Drug Rep for Pfizer seling zithromax, glucotrol XL and viagra. I had no science background at the time as I graduated in psychology. I was one of the few male drug reps and the rest were very nice looking females. I did well at Pfizer and it was my first exposure to medicine but I hated being a lowly rep and most do. I often got "hey you seem like a good guy, why don't you get a real job?" Anyways, I left to pursue medical business consulting which led to more interest in medicine. Finally I went back to school to take my pre-med classes and take the MCAT. So here I am now at the young age of 34 in my M1 year. I think it will be great when I get that first pimping from a drug rep and just shut them down. So here are some weapons for you.

First, most of these reps are very insecure in general. They know that most docs and staff look at them as sample pushers who do not really know anything but a bunch of drug company propaganda. They are only trained in very shallow detail on the drugs / related pathology of the drugs they sell. Most are overly competitive and are taught to hate their competition. So next time a drug rep pimps you you can do a few things. You could ask any basic question just outside their scope and watch them panic to either BS or say "let me get back to you" They can get in lots of trouble for giving out information that is either incorrect or flat out false and they are trained to say "I am not sure but I can check on it and get back to you." Also if you hear them say anything that is slightly wrong or off a little and you correct them or even challenge them they will shut up fairly quickly as they know they are at the end of their knowledge rope and you have not even begun to display your knowledge. Most reps will shut down when questioned about science / facts that they know little about. Their knowledge base is very limited and it is very easy to get them off their game. Remeber they are trained to beleive that doctors are close to being gods and that they are the customer and they make the companies all the money, so docs need to be treated with reverance. Of course not all of the reps act accordingly but they do look up to the doctors with a bit of envy / repect.
Next question their career choice as you compare it to the people who give samples out at the grocery stores. try: "You seem like a rather bright, talented individual why did you settle to become a drug rep?" This will shut them down quickly also. They may get rude and say something about how they make good money etc blah, blah, blah. The fact is I knew very few reps who actually liked their job and we all knew we were a bit of a pain in the butt for most physicians and we really felt like we were on the outside of the real healthcare trying to get in but we were the kids who were not allowed to play.
Finally they hate losing business to another drug and will become very uncomfortable if you start talking about why you like the "other guy's" drug better than their drug. They are trained to push you and ask you why and give you counter points on why their drug is actually far superior, etc. The more you talk about why drug b is so much better than their drug the more angry they become. Every counter point they offer you can comeback with a "well that is not what I have seen in the real world" I like the outcomes much better with drug b." "my patientts do so much better on drug b." "compliance is better with drug b." By the end they will be so flustered they will think twice about pimping a med student or doc again.

I know there are a lot of well meaning and nice drug reps out there. I am just giving some amo for the ones who step out of bounds and start pimping the docs. I plan on using the drug reps that call on me for all kinds of things: golfing, free dinners, ski tickets, sports events, free lunches for me and staff, etc. but never any kind of medical knowledge.

Harsh, yet humorous. I hope it doesn't instigate a flame war with any lurking drug reps...😱

I plan on using the drug reps that call on me for all kinds of things: golfing

Take heed ye drug reps of the old code! Thou hast found my achilles heel! Strike while the iron is hot so thy mayest hear the lamentations of other factions selling similiar yet equally efficacious ACE inhibitors. Take up thy graphite shafted 9-irons ye crusaders of the Crestor! The time of the drug crusade is nigh!

Great topic, just had to say something

Had a drug rep for some ARB in the office and over lunch he was loosing his audiences attention. So, the guy thought it would be a good idea to "pimp" me with some stupid question. To tell you the truth, I was kinda pissed off cause I just wanted to eat my sandwich and go back to work. So I started asking him about renin-release inhibitors which I heard are in some stage of clinical trials. (I was actually curious about this prospect) His answer, "oh, I havn't heard anything about em. Im only a expert on blood pressure control. I havn't even heard of, what did you call it, renin?"

My attending loved it. Later he told me he hated that guy. HA

That's the Gaba-A receptors. B-subtypes actually work by blocking Ca channels, which I bet that silly drug rep got confused about.

This sort of begs the question of why drug reps fail to do their due diligence on the products they shill. It wouldn't take THAT much studying for a drug rep to be able to mop the floor with a med student or a resident on pure pharmacology and physiology relevant to their products. So why don't they?
