First, I congratulate you all for pursuing such a great profession. I am a current student doing a bit of backgroung research on the current career attitudes of entering medical students.

I would greatly appreciate if you would post the following information:

1) The specialty you plan to enter. (I realize some of you may not know right now. If you are unsure, please list the two which you like at this time.)

2) Reason you chose this specialty, briefly. (ie., patient population, lifestyle, intellectual challenge, income, previous experience, seems cool, etc.)

3) Is a parent or close relative in the medical profession? Do you have a role model or mentor in this field?

4) The school you plan to attend.

5) Your ethnicity, gender, and age, if you don't mind. (If you would rather not state, that's fine; please state as much as you feel comfortable.)

Thank you all so much!!

I look forward to reading your responses. And best of luck in your future careers!

Here ya go. . . :)

1) The specialty you plan to enter.
Pediatric oncology

2) Reason you chose this specialty, briefly.
Oncology is a field in which we can, theoretically, "cure" patients, but the treatments necessary to reach that goal wreak havoc upon the body. It's also a changing field that promises to be exciting. Most importantly. . . these children and their families deal with an astronomical amount of fear and suffering, and I want to dedicate my life to helping them in the best way that I can.

3) Is a parent or close relative in the medical profession? Do you have a role model or mentor in this field?
I actually don't have any family members in the medical field, and don't particularly view anyone as a mentor.

4) The school you plan to attend.
Columbia P&S. . . I think :)

5) Your ethnicity, gender, and age, if you don't mind.
White female (Irish-American  ), age 22

field of interest: neurosurgery, neurology, general surgery

why: "brain, booyah" "surgery booyah"

school: whichever I get into

person in medical field: sister doing internal residency

5) Your ethnicity, gender, and age, if you don't mind.

1) I like Family Practice for the ease with which I could stay in my home area. It's rural and I like it that way. :) I also love surgery, but I dont know it would affect my location/lifestyle wishes.

2) FP - I like the way you get to know your patients very well, in areas like this you know almost all your patients by their first names, know their children, ect.

Surgery - I have always loved surgery, and any hands on type activity.

3) No family or friends (except those I've met being a pre-med) who are involved in medicine at all. Well, there is this one cousin who was a surgical tech, but she got fired and now works at a bar. :)

4) The University of Kentucky.

5) White, Male, 26

this was the cleanest format.

1. Specialty
Preventive medicine

not just IMPROVE health, but maintain it for entire populations.

4. School

5. age, sex, ethnicity
21/male/caucasion [North African-American]

1. Specialty: EM or neurology

2. Reason: I shadowed in an EM - awesome stuff, really. I like the diversity in patients and procedures. Not so sure about neurology, I probably shouldn't have put it down. Eh, whatever...

3. Family members: None are doctors, although my dad and grandfather are pharmacists.

4. Rush

5. White male, 22

#1 - Anesthesiology residency to be followed by a Critical Care Med fellowship

#2 - Complex problem solving in a high-acuity environment w/ a minimum of "chronic" in my patient population

#3 - Nope, no parent/relative/friend in this or any other medical field. I have chosen it because I feel it is natural evolution of my 10+ years as a respiratory therapist, I love being in the OR (my personality fits well with the people there) & I had an absolute blast during my anesthesia clerkship -- more fund than any of the others

#4 - I will graduate from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Med 7 June 2003

#5 - Irish/Cherokee // Male // 35 (36 in late May)

I'll play along:

1. Specialty
Pediatric (leaning toward general, but hem/onc and psychiatry are possibilities)

2. Reason
I have always had a strong affinity to working with children (All of my ECs were with children! ie. babysitter, tutor, counselor, volunteer, and RA.) I enjoy interacting with children as they have such an untarnished image of the world and themselves. It's wholesome, heartwarming, and many times candid. In addition, it's a continual challenge to work with children and their parents to develop and hone communication skills.

3. Relatives/Role models
My father is a psychiatrist. He was a surgeon before immigrating here and then he completed a residency in his field. My current boss and his first year fellow are hem/oncs.

4. School
Most likely Einstein unless Temple offers me $$.

5. Age, sex, ethnicity
22/XX/Asian

1) The specialty you plan to enter.

Way too early to even speculate. I will say that EMedicine looks very good and I couldn't take an 8 year residency.

3) Is a parent or close relative in the medical profession? Do you have a role model or mentor in this field?

A couple family members.

4) The school you plan to attend.

Way too early to tell but OHSU would be the most practical. Mayo looks freaking rad though.

5) Your ethnicity, gender, and age, if you don't mind. (If you would rather not state, that's fine; please state as much as you feel comfortable.)

19 white male.

1. Cardiology or radiology (just like Chill).

2. I like the science behind both. I like the patient contact with cardiology, and I like the lifestyle of radiology. Not sure how I'll decide between them...

3. My grandfather was a FP. I suppose he would be a role model. Other than that, nobody.

4. Probably the University of Manitoba, barring any miracles...

5. 22 year old white male.

1) The specialty you plan to enter: Pediatrics or internal Medicine

2) Reason you chose this specialty, briefly: I love the challenge and the fulfillment of working with children. Diversity of patients and situations. Working with the same patients for many years and getting to know them well.

3) Is a parent or close relative in the medical profession? Do you have a role model or mentor in this field? Not really...One of my cousins is married to a psychiatrist, but I really don't know him well.

4) The school you plan to attend. Probably UIC, unless I get into NU or CWRU

5) Your ethnicity, gender, and age: caucasion/ Female/ 21

1) Forensic or adolescent psych
2) Forensic: I like to do puzzles that require nothing more than a body of knowledge, an intellect, and a pad of paper and pencil. Adolescent: Part of me still understands the mechanisms of a kid's mind. After working with kids in a variety of areas, I understand the thrill of pulling back the curtain and revealing for them the Wizard of controlling factors in their lives that they never appreciated were there.
3) No, no, and no.
4) U of MN-Minneapolis, U Vermont, or GWU
5) Female, 28, half South American, half not

Hi--
1. Although it's still really early, right now I'm most interested in pediatrics.

2. I truly enjoy working with children. Also, there would be opportunities to see great diversity.

3. No one in my family is in the medical field. I do have a physician who's been wonderful about allowing me to shadow him and helping me through the process.

4. SLU or Missouri

5. White female, 22
