I dont want to offend anyone, just laying it out. If you want to be a doctor, you will regardless of your stats with determination.

If you have the typical 3.6+ GPA 32+MCAT apply statewide and abroad and chances are you will get into a MD school.

If you got 3.0+ and less than stellar MCAT of 24+ apply to DO schools, who cares about the philosophy BS, you want to be a doctor and if you want to be a doctor for the right reasons and dont care about titles you will do it regardless of the letter abbreviation, especially because you can do a residency in anything you want and do either a DO or MD residency and it wont matter in the end. Heck even DOs are famous, look at Dr. Kirby on 90210, he is a Nova DO and a young Derm. now a multimillionaire.

If you still got low averages, 2.7 or so and lower MCAT, there are great caribbean medical schools, SGU (www.sgu.edu) and Ross (www.rossmed.edu). You will have your MD title if you so much desire it and you will have a chance of being a doctor. These schools have produced awesome doctors and it will depend on your step where and what residency you get. These schools produced awesome doctors, including one from SGU who was Chief Resident of Radiation Oncology at Johns Hopkins University and is now Instructor at Harvard!

All in all, worry not my friends, if you have the drive, desire, and motivation you will be a doctor one way or another, there are many ways to reach your goal even if you have a less than perfect academic past.

    God Bless...

Unless you have absolutely no communication or social skills and bomb the interviews because you come across as a creeper or pompous...just saying.

      ^^^ Indeed!

You also have to have a considerable amount of money or be ok with the greater debt associated with most carib schools, from what I hear.

But I agree. If you have a strong desire and you are not socially inept you will more than likely gain acceptance SOMEWHERE for medical training :).

True about the extra debt for carib schools, but for some people the extra debt will pay itself off, some people opt to apply two or three times to US schools which is equal to two years of lost income as a physician. And I hope your not that socially inept if your going to be a doctor, so unless you say something REALLY stupid in interviews you should be fine, I think if you were smart enough to get through undergrad, take all those hard pre-med courses, the MCAT, etc... you will be smart enough to know how to interview.

Sorry to burst your carebear bubble, but that's just simply not true. Ask the numerous people who drop or flunk out of Caribbean schools what they think of the sunshine and gumdrop approach to med school. Odds are they're not real happy with their $100k debt and nonexistent graduate degree. Some people have the mental acuity and drive to become doctors, and some don't. Desire alone won't cut it. That's just how it is.

If you have a 3.0 and a 24 no DO school will take you, and you'll have a tough time getting into the accredited island schools. If you get into one of the island schools you'd better start performing at a 3.6 and 32 level, or they fail you right out again (ever notice how much smaller their graduating classes are compared to the matriculating classes? That's why we let island docs work in the US, we know the schools weeded out the non hackers). If you want it badly enough you can find a way to make it work, but making it work is going to take more than just applying to somewhere that everyone else has just failed to notice yet. You have to repair your stats, you don't get to just ignore them.

This thread should be reworded: Everyone who wants to go to medical school, WILL get in somewhere!!!"

Milkman is right... not everyone will be able to hack it once they get there.

Also, someone mentioned that caribbean schools are notorious for leaving you with a huge debt... this is true. But, make sure you also keep in mind that osteopathic schools are also VERY pricey (generally). There is an SDN thread which discusses the "most expensive medical schools" - interestingly enough, a good chunk of the schools at the top are DO schools.

              Just something to think about.

I agree, I guess I meant to say anyone who WANTS to get into a med school will get in, staying in is up to you whether it be a US med school, carib med school or DO school, med school is med school you're going to have to work your tail off regardless of where you go and the degree will not be handed off to you for sure.
