I'm currently in the west coast(cali), and I want to back to new york....I spoke to the dean and I can't transfer during 3rd year...rather impossible with everything going on...he said I can do my externships during 4th year, and I should do it, in the state and residency I want to be in? does anyone have an idea, on how can end up doing externships in cornell, columbia, Nyu, mount sinai etc?

I have a brother who is going to einstein? does that help me in any way....I just want to know how I can touch basis with them....the dean of the school, didn't exactly provide the necessary...he was just offended that I made the suggestion that I'm planning to leave a UC school for a "new york school"...with horrible "weather" and exorbitant "high price of living"...as if cali is any different 🙄

can anyone provide suggestions, on how to do externships?

thanks

WMC

Students must apply for externships several months in advance. In general, most are done during fourth year. Theoretically, it's possible to do all of fourth year at another medical school if your home med school allows it. Some med schools charge tuition to visiting students, but most don't; I think that it's just courtesey for different med schools to take students from other schools. Most will charge you a registration fee. The biggest problem you will face in doing externships in NYC is housing since it's so expensive, but if you can stay with your brother, that won't be so bad. You can find more information about doing externships by searching med school websites for application materials.

I agree with ckent but would add that they are first-come, first-served so you should start applying as soon as you can. You might want to try externships at the various NYC hospitals to get a feel for what you like the most.

thanks for the advice guys..

lurkerboy, do you know where I can get a list of the NYC hospitals that have information about their externships programs? or simply list of all the NYC hospitals?

I'd start by looking through the NY Medical schools, as all externships would run through them. Try searching google for Cornell Med , NYU Med, Mt. Sinai, NY Medical College and Albert Einstein Medical College.

I'm familiar with the Academic related institutions in New York. So I will definitely look those up....but there are hospitals like Kaiser for example in Cali, that have residency programs but not academically related....so does anyone have a list of all the hospitals that have internal medicine as their residency?

You can look at FRIEDA which is the residency information database. You can sort by city and that would list every hospital in the area.

thanks Lurkerboy, do you know how I can also check to see what stats each program requires? example, board score, ranking?
