I will be applying to med school this summer and have worked in a hospital for the past 5 months. It has been very rewarding however some of the people I have not gotten along with very well. I'm concerned that when I include this job experience in my applications, that the admission committees will contact the hospital. The person they would talk to is one of the individuals that doesn't like me. Can anyone tell me to what extent admission committees will look into your past experiences. Do they call former employers, supervisors, etc., as if I were getting a job? In other words, what exactly do they do to validate the things included in the application?.....thanks so much for your help.

Personally, I don't know how far they check...maybe they don't. I guess it would depend on the school. But just in case they do, my advice is to come clean with the schools about the situation before a problem comes up. I know this may seem like the kiss of death, but if you can explain the problem, in terms that don't make you seem spiteful, then I think you would be okay. I don't know what your situation is, or why that person doesn't like you, but maybe you can confront them in a reasonable matter and see what the problem is. If they don't know already, TELL them that you're planning on applying to medical school and that your experience at the hospital means a great deal to you. Ask them if there is any way you can improve, get out of the way...or whatever it is that seems to bug them about you. Maybe they are just one of those types that is hard to approach and has just "come off" as disliking you. Maybe if you tell them how much this means to you, they'll find new respect for "the volunteer". I don't know if this post helps at all, but good luck!

PS- Talk to some of the other Docs / Nurses...maybe THEY could be the contact!
