Family member in Prison

Is talking about a family member in prison(nonviolent) too risky for a secondary application? It is a big motivating factor for me wanting to work with inmates and help in their transition back to society however I am worried how it reflects on my character considering how poisonous a personal felony or even misdemeanor can be to an application.
