Hi guys,

I have a quick question here. So i submitted my application a while ago, and i have begun to recieve letters/packets from schools. However, a couple of schools, like case, michigan, kentucky just ask for an additional processing fee (which seems a little crazy if you ask me! Wasnt AADSAS' charge enough!?) But what i wanted to know is, are these fees sent to everyone who applies, or are they sent out selectively to candidates who the school would like to look at more seriously? I know that sounds real confusing...what im trying to say is, are these a form of a supplemental application or just another way to rob us poor dental students?!

Thanks guys

Schools that initially like you will request a secondary application which usually has its own fee associated with it. The price can really range from $30 bucks and higher and supposedly covers the application processing. The secondary asks some questions like the AADSAS but other questions too. But some schools have a fee waiver you can apply for it you are in great financial need but those are hard to come by. I heard that they send a lot of secondaries out to people who apply... if you meet their numbers you get one i think. After reviewing that, I think you start the interview process.

Hope that helps! 🙂

When I applied last year, I sent an additional fee to each and every school I applied to (except Howard where I withdrew my app). The fees ranged from $25-$50.

Secondaries are typically sent out to the majority of the applicants, with a few exceptions. Some schools are kind enough to deny you before the secondary, rather than after, thereby eliminating your need to send in the fee.

For example, Ohio State and Iowa both thought that my 3.47 GPA and 20/21 DAT wasn't good enough, and I was denied PRIOR to a secondary.

Kentucky on the other hand sent me a secondary, I paid the fee and received a denial in the mail 3-4 days later. In this case I am fairly sure that the denial and my secondary/fee to them actually crossed each other in the mail. Nice of them to take my money, eh? 😀

Wow I'm kinda surprised that even with your 3.47 GPA and 20/21 DAT you got rejects from Ohio State and Iowa and Kentucky. Its kinda a scary thought considering my GPA(3.5) is very close to yours.😱 DId any of the schools give you any reasons as to why you were rejected? It can't be cause your GPA and DAT scores were too low right consdiering their incoming class average can't be any higher the 3.47 GPA and 20/21 DAT. Or am I wrong? It is because they are state schools and you were applying out of state?

So scared now....

Another Fee Story:

Last year, I applied AADSAS in June but didn't return some secondaries and fees right away. I emailed U of Maryland in mid - Jan. to make sure that it wasn't too late to send in my fee. They sent me an email assuring me I would be considered. I immediately mailed in the fee.

About a week later they sent me a letter saying that although my stats were competitive that my fee arrived too late in the application cycle for them to consider my application this year.

They kept the $60 fee and encouraged me to reapply next year (with another $60 fee).

Hi jmac81. Do you mind tell us when did you submit your aadsas application (if you know the application #) and when did they send out your application? I submit mine on 6/9, but aadsas keeps NOT sending my application as I checked today. Thanks!

How can schools get away with that crap. make you send a secondary just to deny you a few days later. Thats just wrong,

Secondary's can't ask much more than what they get from the original application. Am I wrong. Basically telling you that they already know they are going to accept your or deny based on the application itself. IF you want ( of course with a fee) to deny you or accept from the secondarys.
Thank goodness TEXAS is not like this. Baylor has a secondary but its more of an economic survey of your household. Thats free.

only one page as well

I'm pretty sure the school fee has nothing to do with how much they like your application. The AADSAS fees pays salaries for AADSAS employees, and the school fee is so that the school will look at your application. I'm part of the "Under 3.0 Club" and applied to Harvard. They requested an application fee as well.

Iowa rejected me because I was an out-of-state applicant.

Ohio State and Kentucky, however, typically take 5-15 people from my undergraduate school. So although I was an out-of-state applicant applying to those schools, I felt it was a smart move simply because they highly recruit applicants from my school.

Iowa is probably one of the most difficult dental schools to gain admission to. Their stats are SUPER high.

Ohio State and Kentucky are also good schools, but my stats weren't competitive for them, according to the letters that they sent to me.

Once again, the thing with Kentucky ticks me off because they had to have mailed out the denial letter prior to receiving my secondary and fee. Grrr. 🙂
