Hi everyone,

I'm a Canadian citizen, will be attending Penn in the fall. I understand that I can get a TN visa to work in US after I graduate but you cannot own your own practice with this visa - you need a green card to own a practice. Would it be hard to obtain a green card as a dentist?

Any fellow Canadians out there practicing in US?

Check out the international forum. From what i've heard it seems its either a dental mill or Rural U.S.A that is willing to sponsor a H-1 visa. Hospital based specialty programs such as OMFS and Pedo and many GPR positions are also going to be out of your reach, although they do not openly admit it.

U can get an H1 easily ( at the border) when u find someone to sponser u.
and you can own ur own practice whenever u want ( as a foreign investor as long as u hire 5 americans, moreover your own practice can sponsor u ie: u will be sponsering yourself 🙂 ) dont worry now get done with school and talk to an immigration lawyer, those guys can do anything. I am in the process now, i will let you know about the details when im done. good luck

This whole statement is FALSE- you cannot get an H1 at the border - a TN is given at the border. As a Foreign investor you need to have a large amount of unborrowed money to invest in the US. The easiest way to get a green card is to marry an american.

The only good thing about studying in the US is that it is still easy to become registered in Canada by taking the NDEB and that you are not considered a foreign graduate like an american MD. I am registered in Wisconsin and Ontario - I worked on a Tn for 8 months. I was going to be sponsered for H1 and then work authorized but the associateship didn't work and I moved to Ontario.

My co-worker is a Canadian (from UBC). Rob is correct, TN is received very easily at the border, H1 is much more complex. My co-worker did get an H1 - he didn't have to work for a dental mill or rural town. We are a 3 dentist practice in the suburbs. Boss sponsored him. Eventually he can open his own practice, but i think Northern BC skiing is calling him back🙂
One misconception is going to dental school in the US has some sort of advantage if you want to practice in the US. It does not. Whether you go to Canadian or US dental school makes no difference whatsoever. Both are accredited by US and Canada boards and recognized as the same. Just pass the boards and a regional board exam.

So a Canadian can own a business under an H1???? Ive heard that there is a certain number of years etc that one must work under an H1 before being eligible to own a business.

Ortho99...how much is this 'foreign investment' that youre talking about?

Thanks alot for your help!

I really need to find out how hard it is to get this H1 visa before I decide to go south...

Thanks!
