over the last 40 years, more women are entering dentistry and raising questions about feminization of dentistry. what impact do think this trend will have on the future of dentistry? will there be more job growth since women prefer to work part time? will there be less demand for practice ownership? what about specalities? what are your thoughts?

I think there will be a more even balance of women and men in dentistry. I have seen part time dentists who are both male and female, as well as full time dentists/specialists of both genders who own their own practices. I hope you're not implying that having more women in dentistry is a negative for the field.

I think for younger dentists, ages 25-40, there are slightly more women. But the profession overall is still male dominated, not implying more men is negative for the field.

Females are also dominating undergraduate schools, incase you didn't notice. Does that mean feminization of education and most careers in general? Nope.

But back to dentistry... some of my female classmates are not practicing dentists any more. 1 married to a priest and focused on "god" right after she graduated. Another 2 or 3 are trophy wives now and married to wealthier men. Some are hard core; opened practices and are very successful, specialized and at the top of their games. What am I getting at? Females will always have more unique options than men in and outside the field, which is a good thing.

Just curious as to where you got the info about women only like working part time?

He is probably assuming all women will marry and have children and be part time workers, part time stay at home moms.

If physicians are any indication, that is a highly likely possibility. Female physicIans are both three times more likely to work part time than male physicians and far more likely to take employed versus partnership positions. It's not a good or bad thing, really- hell, I'd anything it helps secure the future of dentistry with all of the new schools that have been popping up.

Great, so those were 4 spots that could have gone to someone else desperately trying to get into a dental school who would have added value to the marketplace.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure this is also net loss to society and the access issue.

There are many dentists who are contractors, and roam around between offices (through temping agencies), and even take few months off from their work schedule from time to time. Typically those guys are late in their career and enjoy doing this to stay out of boredom. I ran into few of them on a river cruise through Europe.

I guess ADA surveys are not painting the full picture on the dental workforce.

With more spots open than at any time in recent history (maybe ever) wouldn't you agree that this is a good thing? More part-timers means more work available for those who choose full-time work. It also means more employees to choose from.

Better for heterosexual guys to find someone special while going to school!

I will be debt-free but will stay in school for 13 years to be an academic oral surgeon. Guess i would be a terrible deal for most female classmates. Haha

I suggest Coffee Meets Bagel.

We can still marry if we want. We just have to take care of kids from her previous marriages. :)

LOL I am definitely taking all these credits.

Everyone wins. She gets to drive Mercedes, her kids' private college tuition would be paid off, and her ex husbands can save money. And I get to be the nice guy. lololol :naughty:
