The hot rumor going around right now is that with all of the AMCAS madness, there are just fewer acceptances going out in general. Schools seem to be waitlisting a lot, or just downright not telling anything about the status at all and putting off a decision. What do you guys think?

I would say that comsidering its mid-Feb and I still haven't heard a word from 8 schools, you are right. Or, I am just terribly mediocre in the eyes of AdComs.

but there is a defined number of med school spots, and that is totally independent of AMCAS, so i don't understand how fewer acceptances can be handed out this year simply due to the application process. the timeline for handing out acceptances has definitely been shifted this year, but in the end, approximately 16000 people are still starting med school this fall.

I think that it is definitely less than 40000 as apps have been on the downward trend. Under 35000 would be my best guess.

didn't somebody post a few weeks ago that harvard was interviewing less people than normal?

i know interviewing is different from accepting but i wonder if there's at least some correlation...

I doubt they have fewer acceptances, but I definitely think they are coming at a slower rate. In the end, it'll even out.

I agree, Dr. Foxy, and I think that's what ValleyGal was saying in the OP. The timeline has changed, as sandflea said, but I really doubt there will be fewer acceptances overall. I seem to remember a post that said applications were down 6, or was it 8%?

OK, here, I found the <a href="http://www.studentdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=006798" target="_blank">thread that discussed the final AMCAS numbers.</a>

where I had posted this bit of hard data:

    </font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Originally posted by SMW:
<strong>From the Nov. 2 AAMC press release:
Washington, D.C., November 2, 2001- "Nearly 35,000 individuals applied to U.S. medical schools for the 2001-2002 school year, according to data released today by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). This year's applicant pool of 34,859 represents a 6.0 percent decline in the number of applicants from 2000-2001."

Applications are only down by about 2000. :(

Oops, ignore previous post. Those are definitely last year's numbers. Doesn't anyone know this year's numbers?

  11. this year it's closer to 30,000 I believe. i posted about this before..the number i posted WAS accurate..but now i've forgotten (that 35,000 SMW posted has clowded my memory) so i don't know if it's really 30K. search another post...many people chimed in. i got my number (for that other post) from a lady at amcas so it's accurate.

I searched and couldn't find it. Did you know that you've posted on 170 different threads, Caveman? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Maybe you'd have better luck searching than me. Hmmm....maybe I'll see how many I've posted on! :p

Still searching.......more confusion. Why does the <a href="http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/famg12001.htm" target="_blank">AAMC site</a> say there were 37,092 applicants last year, and the press release says 34,859?

On one of the many threads devoted to the question of number of applicants this year, it was mentioned that apps were down by about 6,000. That would mean this year's number would be between 28,859 and 31,092 depending on which of the former figures is accurate. On another thread it was alleged that apps are down by 10,000 this year which would mean total numbers would be between 24,859 and 27,092.

C'mon Caveman, find that thread for us!!

i heard that UIC (university of illinois) accepted too many people last year so they are reducing their class size this year to compensate.

UIC isn't reducing its class size, it will still be 300 people, but they are reducing the number of interviewees accepted off the bat and trying to use their waitlist this year. The last two years they haven't used their waitlist at all becuase too many people that were accepted actually chose to go there. I think they said they ended up with just under 320 for the last two years.

As a last year applicant it seems in reviewing posts from this year that most of the rolling schools are rolling along much slower which is of course more anxiery provoking but in the end the dame number will get in and most of you all will too! Good luck.

What about the average number of schools each person applies to this year? It may have went down, hence schools might have trimmed the number of acceptances based on that.
