Hi, I took the MCAT in August 2000. I'm from NY, and applied to all, and only, schools within the vicinity of NYC. I got rejected from all allopathic schools, and I'm on the waitlist @ NYCOM. My MCAT's are: 11PS, 11BS, 7VR, & R. My GPA ~3.8 science & Non-science, I have volunteer, research exp., and am planning on working for the Americorps if I'm not accepted @ NYCOM. For 2001, I plan to apply to 6 Osteopathic schools, and 1 allopathic (Early Decision). What do you ladies and gents. think about Finch as the E.D. school with my low verbal score? If not Finch, which allopathic school might I have a shot at?

A-Dog,

I think you should call and talk to Mr. Michael Sshaefer at the NYCOM admission office. He might be able to tell you about your chance for Fall 2000. When did you interview with them?

I interviewed on March 13. NYCOM was my only interview. I applied to: NYMC, NYCOM, SUNY Brooklyn, NYU, Cornell, Yeshiva, & Mt. Sinai. Oh, I got accepted to Sackler in Israel, but have decided to take my chances for 2001 rather than go to Israel for four years.

A-DOG,
what do you think your weaknesses were? because you do have an impressive, if not, avg mcat score and good gpa combined. if you read other posts, you will find ppl with similar avg and mcat got accepted, if not, interviews elsewhere. have u thought what kept you away from adcom to grant you an interview?

I agree, other than the 7 on VR,
could it be that there was something wrong
with your amcas essay? or your secondaries?

also, what school did you attend for undergrad?

thanx for any input, as it seems surprising that you did not get interviews to all of the schools you mentioned.

Honestly, I have one recommendation for you. You need to take the MCAT over again. A seven on verbal is way too low. Medical schools are highly looking at the Verbal score because it shows a good indicator of your analytical abilities. If you're weak on the sciences, the medical schools reason that they can attempt to train you. But in terms of verbal, they can't help you there. It's a skill acquired slowly over the years.
Good luck!

I agree that the verbal portion is key, and often used as a tool to weed out applicants during an initial screening. However, it is possible to improve one's verbal score in fairly short order by practice. I know a number who have done it, so don't fret, just apply yourself and build your confidence.

Since when did the Verbal section become the most important section of the MCAT? I always thought it was the Biological Sciences that they mostly looked at. For me, the Verbal section was the most difficult to improve. The other sections I improved after I took it over but the Verbal stayed the same.
