It seems like no one wants to talk about money, but I just found a great site for people interested in how much money they will actually bring home while in residency (or any job for that matter). Although almost all residency programs list the gross amount you will make, you have to pay federal taxes, social security, and state taxes- if your state has them. Try out www.paycheckcity.com and select Personal Calculators, and then Paycheck Calculator.
You can enter the annual salary, the state, and any deductions that you have and get an estimate of how much you will actually bring home each month. (I have no affiliation with paycheckcity!)
