I'm a current fellow scheduled to graduate in July. After that, I'm joining a private practice located >1000 miles away from where I'm training. Until the pandemic hit, the plan was to fly out there next month to start looking for housing. In addition to the inherent risk of travel right now, my hospital just implemented a policy that if you leave the state you have to self-quarantine for 2 weeks (and they count that as vacation time).

Not sure what I'm going to do to find housing in time to start my new job now that traveling's off the table for the foreseeable future. Anyone else running into this predicament?

Probably best to do online, find a cheap temp place, sign short term lease and have minimal stuff and put everything else in storage. I feel bad for the current graduating fellows, cuz one there are not going to be a lot of jobs out there, if anything people are cutting job, or reducing pay. So live frugally like you are a resident for the next few years would be my best advice.

Have you checked in with that practice recently? Might want to make sure the terms of your job have not changed.

What are incoming fellows doing for this July?

Yea, I spoke with the CEO this week and directly asked that question. Per them, the job remains as offered and they're committed to weathering the storm. Thanks for the input, guys. Sucky situation, but things could be a lot worse considering what is going on in the world right now. Trying to keep things in perspective.

My understanding is they're going to come in and replace the departing fellows like usual. As to whether or not the clinics will be back up and running by then I have no idea. The hospital hasn't really given us much of a timeline.

It will be interesting to see how incoming out-of-state fellows will be able to find housing in the harder-stricken cities before July 1st.

It’s also a bit early to find housing for July. Any reason you can’t start physically looking in May?

Two months should be enough lead time.
I hope for my own sake that you’re right. Seems like things will only be worse in early May

Based on the projections I've seen and the feedback I've gotten from our higher-ups, I've been operating under the assumption that things are going to be similar to what they are now or worse in May. But you're right. If things are calmed down by then, I should have time to find something. My fear is that things won't start to settle down until the fall or beyond.

Anyone else think that we would be able to delay start fellowship start time until like September? I figured most of the clinics would be kind of slow, even after this pandemic breaks, it might make more sense to work as attending for a little bit, make a little coin, then start once things pick up again.

I mean the whole thing is just gonna make a clusterfk out of all fellowship programs, disproportionately more so in large metro areas. Starting in September would probably be difficult to manage because there will be a months-long overlap with the people starting in July 2021, even if assuming the volume returns to 2019 levels (procedure volume will likely remain low and wont return to those levels because of the recession that is coming, with people losing their insurance, money etc). Then for 3 months in 2021 it’ll be a low volume of procedures being divided amongst 2 classes of fellows

I am looking at changing houses right now as well, although I'm already established. At least in my state, realtors are not allowed to show houses.
