O wise SDNers,

So I'm moving cross-country to start (med) school in the fall. I didn't go to 2nd look so I don't know anyone else also going to said school. Now I'm looking for roommates who, for all intents and purposes, are total strangers to me (though in my class)! How do you find a good match via internet? you talk over phone and get a feel for it, or what? 😕

Also I am a bit wary of rooming with someone in my class. Have your experiences w/this been + or - ?

i'm in the same boat, my philosophy is just to play it safe and not have a roommate at first.

Same here. I'm going to start out living by myself until I meet more people out there or something. I've talked to a few people who lived by themselves all through grad school and loved it as...so maybe I'll just live by myself the whole time. It all comes down to money.

yeah well. I wish I could afford to live by myself but considering the money I'd save I think I could live with what I get...

I've never been in such a small class (150) so I don't know what living with a classmate might be like. 😕 anyone wanna gimme a clue?

In my last year of undergrad, I had a roommate. I totally didn't know her, just answered an ad to share an apartment with someone who likes cats. She ended up being one of my closest friends, and now four years later and across the country we still find time to visit each other even though I'm in med school and she has her hands full teaching preteens. I ended up saving a lot of money (half the rent!) and making a friend for life. I'd do the roommate thing- especially if they are in medical school. Sure there are bad roommates out there- but maybe talk to the person you might be roommates with to see if you have similar expectations regarding general housesharing issues.

I had a great experience finding random roomates through the email list that my school signed everybody up for as they were accepted during the summer. I was able to save a couple hundred bucks a month by living with two fellow med students in a three BR apt. Three years later I am still living with one of them.

Why would you prefer to find a random non-med student roomate? At least rooming with a med student would virtually guarantee that your roomie will respect the fact that you are in medical school, need a certain amount of sleep, study time, etc.

Whoever you live with, you probably won't be around that much anyway. Just make sure you have a decent place to sleep and don't spend more than you can afford. I believe most financial aid budgets are based on two roomates sharing a 2BR apt so keep that in mind.

Best of luck.

I lived with a roommate in college who wasn't premed. It used to always piss me off that he would chill all the time. His finals were always a week earlier than mine too. 😡 But I guess it's good to have a roommate who brings something new to your life. If my roommate only talked about medicine I probably would have shot him or myself.
