Finding work in the inpatient hospital setting.

Hi there, I am a pre-pharmacy student who is currently finishing pre-req's before I apply to pharmacy school. I am currently working as a tech at CVS. I want to eventually be an inpatient hospital pharmacist. If I were to find work as an inpatient pharm tech, would the chances of me finding a job as an inpatient hospital pharmacist improve or is a pharmacy residency still an absolute requirement?
