Hey,

I was just curious about med schools that are three years? Anyone know of any? I know Mcmasters Medical school in Canada is a three year program. But I don't know about any others. I read on some med schools website that students weren't permitted to finish in 3 years. anyone know about this or any schools?

I haven't heard of anyone that finished med school in 3 years. I don't think there are any in the U.S. that is 3 years. You may be able to finish in 3, but I don't see how that may be possible.

Why do you want to finish in 3 years?

There was another thread about this a couple months back. I think the consensus was, other than McMaster, it was no longer possible.

Calgary is a 3 yr program as well... 3 yrs straight, no summers.

It used to be possible to get through some US programs in three years. My father did it at UT Memphis, following a year-through track (i.e., no summers off). Of course, this was during the Vietnam war. They may have offered the accelerated track to churn out some extra MDs. I don't know.

Bottom line is, though, you can't do it anymore from what I can tell. (Except the aforementioned canuck schools.)

Ohio State has an independent pathway and it may be possible to finish your first two years in a single year.

That is correct. Supposedly a few managed to do that every year.

mcmaster is three years because you dont have classes, you go out into the hospital and start rotations immediately, and teach yourself everything....

Are you serious ? 😱 I guess their physicians are still highly competent...

i dont know about that, ive heard that their students had trouble getting residencies.....they really grill you on whether you are the type of persona that can do everything on your own....

hey blake, are you applying to mcgill?

hey,

so are students who are doing the OSU independent studies pathway able to travel and what not if they're doing everything independently? just curious.

They used to have such a good rep and now they seem to be actively trying to screw it up.

I don't go to Mac but when I was a child I used to think they were one of the top med schools. Now, I've heard nothing but bad things from physicians in Ontario. Seems they've made some strange decisions and that's too bad.

I've already applied to Mcgill, and I wasn't accepted. My only rejection 😀

You can do the ISP over two-three years if you want. Some people do it so they can fit in reaserch. Others do it because they have familial committments far away. I was told that some students dont even live in the same city and only come in for exams during the first two years.

At some schools you can combine the last year of med school with the first year of residency, so you still have 4 years of med school, but your overall medical education is shorter. Of course, this means you have to do your residency at the same place you go to med school, and they only have it for certain residencies.

Some schools will let students take five years for medical school, particularly if they are deficient in several years. Yale lets students take as long as 8 years.

No, Duke is four. They do have an unusual curriculum in that the first two years are done in 11 months, and normally the third year is spend doing a research project. As noted above and in the other two threads on this topic, if you have a bio-related PhD they apparently will let you waive the third year; however, I've never heard that the normal curriculum there is anything other than four years.
