Someone told me that it's possible to finish your Master's while you're in Med 1 if you're half-way through it when you enroll in med school. Does anyone know if this can be done?

P.S. It's possible to enroll in med school without having finished the MSc in the the school that I'm interested in.

If you have formal classes or bench research that must be completed, I think it will be a stretch. If you just need to write and/or defend your thesis, it's possible, but it's very difficult. Medical school is not so much difficult as it is time-consuming. I know one or two people who started medical school while planning to finish off their Ph.D. One of them defended his thesis one week before medical school graduation and the other was still trying to write his thesis during his pathology residency. However, more than anything, medical schools like closure and leaving a program half-way might send out the wrong signal to the admissions committee (assuming you plan on applying to more than one school).

Please pass some of what you have been smoking my way.... 😆

(ok, in reality I have no idea but med school is like having two full time jobs, I can't imagine you would have the time)

Yes, but many schools won't snatch you from another program and make your attendance contingent upon completion.

I wish you had read the previous response before bursting into laughter. Very immature...👎 Which kindergarten do you go to?

It is not likely that you will be able to finish your Masters degree while in medical school. I was almost finished with my Ph.D (had defended and only needed revisions to my dissertation) when I entered medical school. With my first-year medical school coarse load, I was barely able to get the few revisions done that I had left.

Most medical schools will not enroll you without a letter from your research adviser/department chairman stating that you are close to finishing your graduate degree. By "close" I mean, all coursework and research completed with minor work needed to complete dissertation or thesis. If you are only "half-way" you will probably not be interviewed by most medical schools in this country.

There are cases where medical students took a year off (between third and fourth year) and obtained a Masters in Public Health. Other than that and the cases that I mentioned above, it is not likely that you will be able to finish a graduate degree while taking medical school courses.

This likely depends on the school and on the individual situation. In my case, if I'm admitted to the SAME med school where I'm working on my MS, then I've been told by the med school that I can complete the MS as a med student (probably in between 2nd and 3rd year). My school also has an MD/MS program in my subject area which I'm sure is why this is a possibility and is the main reason why I choose this school. As a side note, I'm ultimately interested in MD/PhD so in my case, the "rules" may be different.

OMG lighten up.

They have a MBA / MD program at my school and students meet with varying success. One student is taking a year off because of the masters so it affected his ability to finish in 4 years. For all of them, I think the time devoted to the masters interfered with mastering the first two years of med school.

If you talk about finishing a program that doesn't have a special relationship with the med school I can't imagine how it would happen. Having gotten a masters in an unrelated field myself (computer science) there is no way my advisor would have allowed it to happen. I was working 60-80 hours for him a week.

Is a mater anything like a fater?

Anyways, I had to fight my way out of my MS once I got my acceptance. I successfully defended 3 days (I think) before moving across the country. It was stressful. After I was moved in and I started, one of my advisors decided he "needed" to throw in some more edits. He actually made me go through two more rounds of revisions! I wrote those revisions and got the thing printed up (another chore when you're not in the same state) during my first few months of med school.

Is it possible? Yes.

It it fun? Not unless you enjoy pain.
