I don't think it would be that great. I would stick to the dental decks. If you really get into what is on the back of the cards and back those topics up with review books, you will do great. USMLE books are more geared to medicine, obviously, but the focus is way too different.

I highly disagree. I found First Aid USMLE extremely relevant to my Part 1 exam. I would do it in addition to the decks and other materials.

Maybe it is good. I just wouldn't give up the decks. The First Aid book is really nothing special, other than a highly condensed version of information. If you pick and choose from the dental decks and augment from that you can do very well and maximize your efficiency. The key is to go pick one up from the book store and look at it and see. They should have an open copy for you to look at. If it looks useful, buy it. Remember, this information is geared to a completely different test, so you might want to pick and choose what you study in it. If you use it be careful and, obviously, don't study only that. I knew a few people that tried to use it as one of their main study sources and bombed. That may just be that they were poor test takers.

I can't stress enough looking at the back of the dental deck cards and elaborating on the information that is there. If you do that, it will get you some questions for sure.

I don't know, from my experiences taking USMLE and NBDE i think that first aid would be way overkill for NBDE, i'd stick to what jedi says.

I agree with cuneatus. I though First Aid was a really good supplement to the decks. There were at least 5 questions on my micro/path section that were not covered anywhere on the decks but were definitely discussed in First Aid.

I agree with both these guys. It's overkill...

First Aid for USMLE seems to be standard boards study material here at UCLA. We are a bit weird when it comes to NBDE Part 1, however.

I have to agree with griffin and cuneatus. First Aid was a great augmentation for NBDE. I agree with Jedi that the decks should be the primary source (know the front and backs of those cards cold). But, there were a significant number of topics and little tidbits in the USMLE First Aid that were on many old exams as well as the exam I took that weren't covered in the decks. It's a relatively short book and is great source for extra topics and plenty of helpful mneumonics. I would also advise to save taking a look at it until you've "mastered" the decks and taken an old exam or 2. Again, I definitely don't think it's overkill...

The problem with first aid is that there is a lot of stuff in it that most dental students would have never learned to begin with, unless you took classes with med students. This was my experience anyhow, and the first aid book pretty much only gives you snippets of knowledge about stuff so you need to have the background in it from the beginning.
