Hi all,

I'm currently weighing my interests in a few different schools and was trying to find recent statistics on the match RATES for first choice residency programs. I've seen the match lists of most of the DO schools out there, but have had difficulty finding out just how many of those are students' first choice. In particular, I'm trying to find the statistics on VCOM, WVSOM, TUCOM-CA, and LECOM-B. I also am interested in RVUCOM, but realize they won't be graduating their first class for a couple more years...

Also, for those of you already in school, how did you factor match rates in with everything else (ie. geographical location, your comfort level, etc.) and what emphasis you placed on these different factors in deciding the right school for you?

Thanks

Not sure that specific statistic you are looking for is going to help you make a decision - ??
Wouldn't the value of such a % be predicated upon whether or not you felt the student's were "aiming high" enough?

im pretty sure this number is no longer published for individual schools by the group that runs the match. At most i think they publish how many people get one of their top three spots for all schools.

The first-choice match rates for AOA residencies are found in the current month's issue of JAOA for last year's class. This years rates won't be available for next year. There is no way to obtain that data for ACGME residencies. No one has that data, so it is not used by anyone when they make choices.

It would be a meaningless statistic if it were available. Most schools will tell you their students get one of their top three residency choices in the match. It is likely true.
The reason for this is that by residency application time most students have self selected themselves.Only those who are highly competitive will seek out the more difficult specialties to match into.Applicants will focus on programs they are most likely to obtain. You can only rank programs you interview at so matching at your top choice may not reveal much.
Look at the match lists of your schools ..if the majority of students seem to get residency placements at specialties and hospitals that would suit you that should be good enough. In fact its very difficult for med school applicants to judge these lists.

Looking at the first choice match is a meaningless exercise.

School A: a school has terrible advising and everyone shoots way too low. Most students get their top choice.

School B: a school has solid advising and people apply mainly to competitive fields where you often have to go 5-10 deep in you rank order list to match.

If you look at first choice matches school A would come out far and ahead but I would say that school B is a better choice. The moral, unless you know what you are doing, match lists and statistics the schools throw at you are largely meaningless.

What do you mean self-selected?

What do you mean self-selected?

they relize that there is no way they can get the field they originally wanted with their grades or boards scores so they decide on another field that they know they can get

The US News rankings website has first choice match rates for some schools. VCOM had a 65.2% rate according to them, which is on the high side for the DO schools with reported data. But I still think this figure doesn't help you much.

its probably only for the AOA match since the ACGME does not report that information anymore for the allo match
